5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents struggling with teens
This is a must read for parents of teens and children of all ages. It really helps to open our eyes to what we mistakenly do to help cause our older children to turn away from their families. Even our best efforts to keep and protect our children is what pushes them away at times. I loved this book and have heard many people I know give praise for the help they too have...

1.0 out of 5 stars Wow, take this garbage to the dump.
I'll admit I couldn't even finish the book due to the outrage I felt inside over the blatant brainwashing that is hailed as virtuous. Tell me, does God get happy by parents forcing their kids to be saved "or else"? This book is advocating sheltering children from ANY outside influence. If you're a homeschooled 12 yr old boy/girl and don't even know what sex is then...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents struggling with teens, November 10, 2011
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
This is a must read for parents of teens and children of all ages. It really helps to open our eyes to what we mistakenly do to help cause our older children to turn away from their families. Even our best efforts to keep and protect our children is what pushes them away at times. I loved this book and have heard many people I know give praise for the help they too have received in the the loving, honest words in this book! Just love the way Michael and Debi Pearl give truthful insight and help to today's families! This book would help not only the parents but anyone who works closely with children and teens, whether they be family, teachers or whatever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Parents Please Read!, November 13, 2011
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
This is an excellent book! You want to know why so many "Christian" kids turn away as they reach high school, college, young adult age? Read this book! And see how this devastation can be avoided! I know so many family's whose children would greatly benefit from Jumping Ship. Parents want the best for the children. Sometimes things can be overlooked and/or there is blindness in areas that is hurtful to your child. Do not allow yourself to be oblivious to those things which cause children to "jump ship." They are preventable.

5.0 out of 5 stars BIG HELP FOR PARENTS, November 12, 2011
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
Going against the world in what is popular and easy, the Pearls have written this book to help teach and encourage us to teach and train our children in the way they should go. How not to loose them to the world. They've taught me to not be so selfish and to open up my life to my children...be a part of their everyday life...go have fun with them...be good listeners...respect them. I see the fruit! Thank you Pearl family for opening your lives and hearts and so much of your time to a world that is craving godly answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every parent should read this book, June 17, 2008

All I can say is that if every Christian parent (homeschooling or not) read this book and applied even half of it, the 75% of children who were raised in strong homes and in the church who leave their faith once they leave home would be slowed to a CRAWL. My husband and I have children of various ages, and things in our home began to change nearly overnight, and continued with daily changes that we could hardly have imagined. (our leaning-toward-rebellion teen suddenly folded my laundry, and cleaned the kitchen completely on her own, just being nice! Her heart is changing too, she talks to us differently, shares things she has clammed up for months...) Parenting became a joy again, and we could not believe how blind we had been. Furthermore, applying what they suggest is even FUN and may bring joy and enthusiasm back into your life that you forgot you had lost~ long ago. It is a VERY short book and quick read, convicting, but also gives so much hope. I pray this book does even half as much for you as it did for us, and even with that, you would see a miracle. (P.S. you may want to buy many copies because you will want to share it with everyone you know! It's that amazing.)

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who want the best for their kids, January 15, 2012

It is a concern of all Christian parents. What if my child rejects God; what did I do wrong?

Mr. Pearl is quite clear that the problem can be the parents. He makes it clear that parents should NOT be tyrants. Abuse of a child is beyond a terrible sin! He makes it clear how beyond dispicable the abuse of a child is. (Which is why I find some of the other reviews on this book curious. I do not think they actually read this book.) The author makes clear the terrible results of abuse and how it is not what God intends at all.

He also talks about how a parent should not be hypocritical. You have no right to do something wrong and then get made when your child does the same thing. You, as the parent have a responsibility, no a duty to live your life right for the sake of your children.

All discipline should be done out of love, not anger and again, NOT ABUSIVE!!!!! He makes that clear on too many pages to list here.

But even with the best of homes, he talks about what happens when a child rejects Christ; that it is ultimatly their decision and not the fault of the parent (IF that parent has not been abusive)

It is a great book for Christian parents, but in truth it is a great book for any parent discussing how abuse is so very destructive to a child and ultimately the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great follow-up to Train Up A Child, January 4, 2012

I read their book "To Train Up A Child" when my two children were toddlers and applied their Biblical techniques with great effectiveness. My children turned out well behaved, well adjusted, sociable and, horror of horrors, happy! Now that my children are teenagers, I just read this book and am amazed at the remarkable insight Micheal Pearl has into the mind and heart of teenagers. Over and over again, I kept exclaiming "of course!". He gets it and gives practical tips and examples on encouraging and discipling young adults. I would consider this book an effective guide to establishing an "apprenticeship of life skills" for them to keep them fulfilled and immune to the siren call of the world's "pleasures".

Don't let the mealy, "feel good", anti-Pearl, anti-corporal punishment haters in other reviews dissuade you from using this book. Since it deals with pre-teens and teenagers, there is not a single mention of corporal punishment in this entire book. It contains nothing more than Biblical based wisdom to keep your God loving children from straying when the temptations of the world eventually beckon them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standing Ovation, December 22, 2011
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
Once again the Pearls deliver it just as it is in black and white. This book really asks us to examine the sincerity of our hearts before the Lord. You can fake a lot to many folks but not to your children. I am thankful for the insight Michael & Debi give to us as parents, no matter what stage of life we are at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope for the teen years, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
I already have a copy of this book. It is a breath of fresh air for parents who are wondering if they are doing everything "right" concerning their teens. Directed towards homeschooling families, the author shows the difference between religion (which your kids will run screaming away from) and true Christianity. Convicting at times, but filled with helpful truths and ideas. Even if you're not homeschooling, but are concerned about today's youth, this book is excellent. May I ask, is your Christianity something that would inspire a 16-year-old?

5.0 out of 5 stars TAKE HEED, November 27, 2009
This review is from: Jumping Ship: What to do so your children don't jump ship to the world when they get older (Paperback)
Watching in dismay as Christian homeschool families, one after the other fell apart, strayed far, far from the faith and home, our family wondered what in the world was going on. We had the idea that what we saw on the outside, was clearly not what was going on inside. Not inside the home and certainly not inside the heart of the individuals in these families.
Jumping Ship opened that up, made it clear to us, that we were not imagining things. We applied the truth of the book with the reality of the results around us, and found them to be accurate. Better yet, we were able to take a good, deep look at what we were guilty of in our own home, and admit fault, failure and forge ahead with a new view in sight.
This book is VERY useful. An excellent gift to ANY family that claims Christ.
