5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool!, June 9, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Jumpstart 1st Gr: Jumbo Workbook (Paperback)
My 6 year old daughter who will be in 1st grade this fall loves this book! This is one book that wont be thrown in the corner and forgotten. My daughter has worked hours on this book. She loves it!!! She does not feel like it is work either. I highly recommend this for summer work or to catch up. It is huge and not a tiny work book they will whiz through in an hour. Out of all the workbooks we have had this is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun step-by-step learning, July 12, 2002

This review is from: Jumpstart 1st Gr: Jumbo Workbook (Paperback)
My almost 4-year old daughter just received this workbook (the 1st grade edition) as a present from Grandpa. She enjoys completing the excersises, with a little adult help to make sure that she is following the directions correctly. I like that the book progresses in difficulty as the lessons get completed. My daughter is already learning how to read with a Phonics method, so the phonics excercises were at the right challenge level. The workbook did help her pick up new sound combinations in the middle of words, which she had not covered yet in her Phonics class. I was surprised that she seemed to be able to handle the beginning Math without much trouble, such as grouping and counting by tens, and how two and three digit numbers are constructed, since before this workbook she was only counting up to twenty, and adding very small numbers. My daughter really likes the animal characters, and of course, the stickers. I plan on buying her some of the kindergarten books and as soon as she finishes them go back to this workbook.

Utilizing frequent positive reinforcement techniques, this workbook has become my 6 year-old son's most frequently requested book. He just loves to do the activities. Each section is separated by levels, with the child earning a money sticker for each level completed and a special certificate reward sticker when the whole section is completed. The directions are simple and easy to understand and gives the child understanding into the many nuances of the english language, such as how to recognize long vowel sounds vs. short vowel sounds and when to utilize the silent "e". Handwriting is heavily practiced, as are mathematics, time, money, reading and spelling among other subjects. This book is truly a gem and intensely helpful for summer vacations to keep your child's mind active during this scholastic "down time". All activities are made into games with colorful pictures and puzzles - all pages are fully colored, no boring black and white. It is 100% worth the money and I fully intend to buy all the other jumpstart workbook as my son progresses through school.

My son loved this book and completed it within a few months. I got it at the end of the summer to keep him busy on a rainy day at the beach, but he's kept going back to it, even during the school year. He really found the sticker system motivational, and enjoyed "rewarding" himself at the end of each section. There is a sheet of stickers at the front of the book, and the kids can put a coin sticker at the bottom of each completed page. Then, when they complete a section (math, reading, word completion, etc) they get a bigger sticker to put on a "certificate of completion" at the back of the book. It really held his interest, and he is so proud of his certificate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happily surprised, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Jumpstart 1st Gr: Jumbo Workbook (Paperback)
My 5 year old daughter does about 5 pages a day. I like how it reinforces her spelling and reading. The directions are not something she can read herself and understand, but after I explain them she can do the work on her own. The exercies are interesting and the stickers break up the work. I wish that the math and writing were more mixed together, but they each follow a logical progression the way they are set up. I will try to find something similar to this for when she completes this book and buy another level when she is ready.
