JumpStart 2nd Grade Math Workshop: Good workbook, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Jumpstart 2nd Gr: Math Workshop (Paperback)
My daughter liked this product. Here's her comments:
Hello, I am StoryMaker, one of JaneLovesJesus's 3 daughters. I usually use the kid's review form, but temporarily I am going to be using Mom's account. I have enjoyed JumpStart software since I was in Kindergarten. When I was in 2nd Grade or so, I learned about JumpStart workbooks. I wanted to have some, so Mom got me a big lot of JumpStart 2nd Grade workbooks off eBay. Among my favorites was Math Workshop.
In JumpStart 2nd Grade Math Workshop, CJ Frog and Edison Firefly, two adventurers that kids know from the software, use time-travel to visit a castle world. CJ enters the castle tournament, and he'll need the help of random 2nd Graders to win. Kids hop from activity to activity, helping the princess and competing against Ratso, a filthy rat who challenges CJ.
In the corner of many of the pages, there's a square that's labeled "CJ's Clues". Inside of the box are hints, tips, and info about the subject that you & CJ and currently studying. However, it is not good to rely on CJ's Clues for all your info. If you do, you'll be pretty much clueless. One page corner isn't really enough to explain enough about certain subjects to help kids out. It's better to be at least a little familiar with the topic before using this workbook.
There are plenty of topics covered - even & odd numbers, comparing numbers with greater & less then, addition, subtraction, early multiplication, and fractions. It's a good intro to multiplication, can boost fractions, and exercises addition. Oh, and, about even & odd numbers: I gotta say, kids have to know what this is before using this workbook because CJ's Clues talks about dividing by 2 on the subject of even & odd numbers. I think that some 2nd Graders could get confused by this, so it's better that they know already.
The activities range from a multiplication maze to drawing apples on trees and saying which tree has more. Like I said, it's a good intro to multiplication, but please note that all that multiplication can get on someone's nerves. If your child gets annoyed with all the math problems, it's best to take a break for up to a few days.
Despite all it's good points, I was kind of annoyed by the storyline, to tell you the truth. I mean, the basic idea is great, but I thought that the king wanting to meet CJ and the princess looking so happy when CJ was around was a-nnoy-ing. I was never fond of these things where this one virtuous character gets SOOOO much attention and love and the other people are...so-so. I was also annoyed how at some points, Ratso was CJ's rival; sometimes he was trying to stop CJ from saving the princess; and sometimes they sliced cakes together. (No exaggerating!) Of course, I didn't care TOO badly, the activities being fun and all, but they could of done better.
This workbook, like other JumpStart workbooks, awards kids with stickers when they finish sections. I didn't even use the system. Seriously, I just didn't care. I just liked the activities. After all, I view JumpStart 2nd Grade Math Workshop as a good "reread", not as something I finish and don't read again. I like doing it again and again. It's quite fun, and even now that I am much higher than 2nd Grade I like to read again it and do a little multiplication drilling.
To add to its reread-ability, I don't write in it, I do it mentally. Mom always had "Don't write in your workbooks!" as a general rule, anyway.
If you liked this workbook, you might want to look at some of these:
*JumpStart 2nd Grade Time & Money Workbook (Great, but not available on Amazon, you'll have to look on eBay)
*JumpStart 2nd Grade Math Workbook (Never owned it, but you might want to look)
*JumpStart software, especially JumpStart Advanced 2nd Grade (I love it!)
Overall, I think JumpStart 2nd Grade Math Workshop is a good workbook for homeschool. It is a great way to learn and practice math for 2nd Graders. It also works for higher grade levels. Another great JumpStart product! Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
