Review

Jumpstart is the perfect title for this cornucopia filled with essential information that writers need more than ever to succeed. His easy-to-read, generous advice comes out of his passion for helping writers and his decades of experience. Jumpstart will enable new or published writers to kick their career into high gear. I learned a lot from it. --Michael Larsen, AAR, partner, Larsen-Pomada Literary Agents; author of How to Write a Book Proposal and How to Get a Literary Agent
Terry has years of experience in traditional publishing makes him uniquely qualified to write this book. The 3rd paragraph on page 61 is worth one hundred times what you will pay for his book and I recommend you buy two copies: Buy one for you, and one for an author you know whom you feel has lost hope in their ability to promote their book. --Alex Mandossian, author, trainer and CEO/Founder of Heritage House Publishing
You and I are living in one of the greatest times in history. Take Terrys counsel and apply it to your daily life. You will be able to go to places you never dreamed possible. --Mark Victor Hansen, Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul

I don't know how he did it, but Terry Whalin managed to pack this book with a TON of valuable information. Not only does he offer guidance on how to get your book written, but he explains the importance of building a platform, how to get exposure as a writer, how to network with other writers and even recommends (gasp!) giving content away--something I agree with wholeheartedly.

Terry's extensive experience in the publishing industry comes through on every page. With real-world examples and anecdotal stories, this book is easy and fun to read.

This is a valuable and essential guide for anyone considering following the dream of writing a book. I can tell you from experience that the ride is fabulous--and will be made much easier if you do your homework BEFORE you hit the ground running.

When you want to learn how to do something, you want to learn from someone with experience and expertise in the field, right? Well, if you want to know how to get your writing published, I can think of no one more knowledgeable and experienced than Terry Whalin, author of Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams: Insider Secrets to SKYROCKET Your Success.

Terry is a professional writer/journalist who has also been an acquisitions editor and a literary agent. He has written over 60 books, and his articles have appeared in more than 50 magazines. He has recently joined Intermedia Publishing as Vice President and Publisher.

Jumpstart is a writers' conference in one volume. Whalin provides a complete overview of how the publishing industry works these days. Because so many beginning writers don't understand the business from the publisher's point of view, he gives details on book sales to help writers understand why publishers are hesitant to take a chance on a "newbie."

New writers, if you want a shortcut to getting your work published, you need to read this book carefully and understand that this man knows what he's talking about. Published writers, things have changed in the publishing industry in recent years. Maybe it's time to take a fresh look at how your work fits into today's publishing scene. Terry's book can help you do that. It will be the best money you've spent lately.

This should be a desktop reference book for anyone wanting to write and be published. My copy is covered in highlighting and I have even referenced some of Terry's writing in my blogs. Just two days ago I quoted his book selling stats (pg 45-46) during a phone conversation with a Newport Beach, CA first-time author. She was stunned.

This book is just filled from front to back with the nuggets Terry graciously shares from his lifetime in the real world of writing and publishing.

I've had the sincere pleasure of meeting Mr. Whalin on several occasion. He walks his talk. You will learn much from his insider knowledge.

...Practical
...Insightful
...Knowledgeable
...Very helpful

A must-read for every aspiring author.

Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams: Insider Secrets to Skyrocket Your Success by W. Terry Whalin, is a delightful collection of inspiring, true stories combined with powerful yet easy to implement marketing strategies. In his words, "Through the pages of Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams, I'm giving you a window into my own experiences in this market, combined with my practical how-to write information about the writing world."

Typically, the first time I read a nonfiction book I will skim through the book to see what catches my attention. I'll make notes and then go back to reread each section in detail. In reading Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams I often forgot that I was reading a nonfiction book. It is highly entertaining and is like reading a novel. I was riveted and read each section, in detail. Each chapter includes two personal application sections. The Dig Deeper section provides recommendations of additional resources, such as books and Internet sites, while the Awaken Your Dreams section asks a series of self-evaluation questions to help you make personal use of that chapter's material.

I had the good fortune to interview Terry on a live conference call. Members of my author community loved the interview and one of our members, Chuck from Florida, shared that he read Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams and applied the section of branching out and trying different outlets for his writing skills. This has increased his self-confidence in ways that he never thought possible!

Terry tells the story of one publisher that received 6,000 unsolicited manuscripts over the course of a year. Their staff reviewed the manuscripts and of the 6,000, they published zero of the unsolicited manuscripts.

Over the years I've tried to read every book I can on writing and publishing. What really makes THIS book standout from the others is that Terry Whalin has worked in publishing for over 20 years. He shares his best secrets with you like a trusted friend.

Whalin has written for 50 different print mags, written 60 books with traditional publishers and has been a magazine and book acquisitions editor. There's not much he hasn't seen firsthand.

In a gentle way, this book prompts real action. He provides sections at the end of each chapter to "dig deeper" and 'awaken your dreams." These should prompt you to get in the game and finally write that book.

He has some key beliefs:
Story-telling is essential no mater what type of book you want to tackle.

He believes in the need for 'apprenticeship.' That's the honing of your craft over time with different types of publications.

He believes that magazine writing is a way to 'sharpen your skills.'

His love of reading also comes through in this book. Most writers love reading and he's no exception. If it's true that "83% of Americans say they want to write a book, yet few ever do" this book is a must read.
