Fun Look at What We Find Scary,
By
This review is from: Jumpy Jack & Googily (Hardcover)
I got this book after falling in love with Rosoff & Blackall's collaboration, "Meet Wild Boars." While "Jumpy Jack & Googlily" are slightly less enthusiastically received by my 2-two, we both like this book quite a lot.
I love finding the clues in the text and illustrations that prove what my son and I are already suspecting -- that Googily is indeed a monster. It's smart, a bit of a puzzle, and it keeps the reader and listener actively engaged -- which helps make repeat readings interesting. This is the first "monster" book I've read with my son. I was a bit worried that it might create some monster-angst, much as I remember "Where the Wild Things Are" doing for me, but it hasn't. In fact, it presents monsters in a very unscary light. While I doubt my two-year old is consciously pondering the philosophy of "the Other," this book successfully shares a story of a snail who is afraid of what (he thinks) he does not know. In the end we learn that a single sock may actually be much, much more frightening than a big, bug-eyed, blue, bushy-eyebrowed, two-fingered, thin-footed, bowler-hat-and-shorts wearing, monster - depending on the perspective through which we view the world.

My 4 yr. old son chose this book at the library and loved it so much that we decided to buy it for him. It's still a favorite and he likes it because it makes monsters a little less scary.

Such a sweet and exciting book! My 5 year old was enthralled and asked question after question. She even noticed key elements on her own.
A great book to take a closer look at your fears and laugh a little at the ridiculousness of them!

This was another of those unexpected stories that we found at the library and love so much that we had to order a copy for the permanent home collection. Of the 12 or so library books collected that week, this was the one story that had to be read every night, often twice! Jumpy Jack and Googily are the most adorably illustrated characters, and the cute back and forth between them as they hunt for a feared monster (that looks just like Googily!) is infectious. Can't go wrong with this one!

A quirky, fun book--my 2-year-old can't get enough of it, and his older brother (4 yrs) likes it a lot too. It's prompted much discussion in my house over whether a sock can be scary or not (Conclusion: even a 2-year-old knows that socks can never possibly be scary).

Who'd of thought? I found this at the library and somewhat reluctantly brought it home. I read to my granddaughters, 3 and 5, almost daily (via Skype) and my grandson, age 4. Of the thirty plus books I've read recently Jumpy Jack and Googily has been requested by all way more often than any other book. (It still isn't my kind of book, but then the author wasn't trying to appeal to 65 yr old men.) Ultimately, I had to sent a copy to my granddaughters after I returned the library copy, and I may yet have to buy another for my grandson here. The story is short and simple, the pictures are great, the kids love to anticipate every page (again and again and again...) Maybe somebody can explain to me why the last line "The sock says 'Boo!'" is so-o-o hilarious. Seriously, I salute these authors!
