The Jungle Book: A Pop-Up Adventure (Classic Collectible Pop-Ups)

When I first saw THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ (from the Robert Sabuda Studios), I was sure that nothing could surpass the complexity and paper engineering finesse exhibited. Then, MOMMY was released (and even though Maurice Sendak and Matthew Reinhart gave no credit to Eastman's ARE YOU MY MOTHER?, I still felt that I had seen another remarkable advance in pop-up book technology. Now, that I've held THE JUNGLE BOOK by Matthew Reinhart and sat in awe at his two-foot pop-up, I cannot even conceive of what could out-do this magical experience. I'm sure something will, and believe me, I want to be there when it happens.

This is well designed and constructed. This book would belong on anyone's short list of TOP pop-up books. My 3 yr old grandchild adores my pop-up collection and this is one of her favorites - boys love this one also.

The Pop Up book of The Jungle Book is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It is amazing in it's scope. I love it madly. I use pop up books and other more dynamic books in my classroom because I teach ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages. Since reading English can be difficult, other stragegies can be used to entice students into reading English. The pop up books are facinating and ofteh not used in other cultures so they are great to intrigue students. The Jungle Book has an attachment to India and Asia so that helps my students also.

This book is a condensed version of the original accompanied with wonderful pop-ups. It has six two-page spreads, but there is also at least one partial-page fold out on every spread (partial pages are half the size or smaller than the main page). The main spreads each have a large pop up. The partial pages, typically two mini two-page spreads themselves, all have a pop up per spread, too. When you turn some of the partial spreads, they trigger changes in the main spread. The pages are full of color, including the back sides of the pop ups. The font is easy to read.

The condensed text works in that you aren't left with gaping holes in the story if you don't know the full version. Know that it is condensed so your favorite part might not be included.

The large pop ups are fabulous and the smaller ones are interesting. For the most part, the pop ups open and close smoothly. I did have trouble with two small ones: -one has a part that is not properly glued and it catches when I try to close it -a part is supposed to spin, but mine spins only some of the time.

This book would be interesting for the very young (with help to deal with the pop ups), tweens/teens who are reading the original story, and collectors. It could spark interest for reluctant readers when paired with the original.

DESCRIPTION OF POP UPS - A description of the pop ups isn't as helpful in general, but it will give you an idea of how many pop ups are included. Also, it may provide insight as to what is included in this condensed version. The list gives the main pop up, then partial page pop ups included on that main spread.

We love these pop-ups! It is great! We collect all of the Sabuda Reinhart pop-ups, and this one is as good or better than any of the others. The story is definitly for the older child, over 4, but it is a great one to have, especially if you collect pop-ups for your kids!

I love the pop-up books and order one each Christmas to add to my collection. I love this the Jungle Book.

My granddaughter has turned out to be an avid reader. At 7, she already has one of Reinhart/Sabuda's books which she and her brother treasure. One of my favorite authors is Rudyard Kipling, and when I was a child, Sabu played Mowgli in the old movie version of "The Jungle Book". I still love that movie. When I saw that Reinhart had it in pop-up (another favorite thing of mine), I could not wait to give it to her for her birthday. The book is bright, so intriguing with its explosive pop-ups, and secret corner pop-ups that you miss, sometimes, because the centerpiece is so amazing, I knew that I had to give it to her.

I made the right choice. She loved it. When Sher-Khan jumped out of the page at her, her eyes got wide and she took her fist and carefully put it in his mouth. And then she laughed. Her brother, who is nearly 5, was impressed too. Since he loves sharks (both of them do), he gets that one for his May birthday.

I can't tell you enough about the quality of these books. They are for children of all ages (why can't grownups have pop-ups?) and collector's items.

I want to give them the whole series, including the Sabuda collaborations.

You absolutely cannot go wrong. The story was adapted for this book, and until my granddaughter is ready to read Kipling "like a big girl", she has lost nothing.

I hope you will consider this for your young ones.

Any book created by Matthew Reinhart is a fantastic work of art.
The Jungle book is no exception.

Matthew Reihart and Robert Sabuda are "hands-down" the two most talented "pop-up" creators/paper engineers I have ever seen.
I have some pop-up books where these two artist collaborated ... and the books are simply magnificent.
I bow to their talent.

The Jungle pop up book is fabulous. The artwork cuts and folds go beyond the usual run of the mill pop up book. The artistry makes the book come alive for children as well as adults. Mathew Reinhart is a master of his craft.
