Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

At the height of Beatlemania, the Disney folks were teaching kids how to really swing with this soundtrack to their adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Of course, it's Phil Harris (the voice of everyone's favorite hipster bear Baloo) who steals the show with the original slacker anthem, "The Bare Necessities," but his scat match with an inspired Louis Prima on "I Wan'na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" is also not to be missed. Songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman--who clearly enjoyed playing the irony card on songs like "Trust in Me (The Python's Song)" and "That's What Friends Are For" (The Vulture Song)"--offer entertaining reminiscences about the project in a 12-minute bonus track. George Bruns's wonderful underscore, a couple early song demos, and two post-soundtrack Baloo numbers round out a collection that suggests, in the most charming way imaginable, that it really is a jungle out there. --Bill Forman

5.0 out of 5 stars yes it is the soundtrack December 2, 2002
Format:Audio CD
A reviewer below complained that this is not the soundtrack of Jungle Book, but it most certainly is... The record he remembers as a child is a storybook album, which is very different than a soundtrack. Since he was dissapointed that this is not an read aloud type version of the movie, he pans the CD and gives it 1 star. This CD is a masterpiece of the original Disney music and score of the the actual movie, taken right from the master recordings. Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome! April 30, 2001
Format:Audio CD
The original recordings for making the movie were used to make this CD. This CD is yet another stellar masterpiece of historical preservation, overseen by producer Randy Thornton, whose father worked for Disney (you can see his name in some of the live action movie credits). The music has been digitally repaired and reassembled, deleted portions replaced. Randy is really devoted to making these CD's special and throws in all the extras such as an interview with the fabulous composers "the Sherman Brothers". They composed many many songs for Disney over the years like Mary Poppins, and non-Disney like "Chitty CHitty Bang BAng". The composer of the beautiful underscore was George Bruns who wrote the music for the Pirates of the Caribbean" (with X. Atencio writing the lyrics). The song "Bare Neccesities" was composed by Terry Gilkyson. There are 2 songs from an old Jungle book story album that are not actually in the movie, and have not been released in about 30 years. Randy also added 2 previously unreleased demos of songs that did not make it into the film to give you a feel for the original production process and the filmmakers search to get it right. Remember that if you have seen the movie, you only heard snippets of many of these songs, many were overwhelmed with dialogue. But in this CD, the producer engineered the dialogue out so you can hear the original recording as it was made to be, simply awesome. Nice interior 15 page booklet with lyrics, great art, and liner notes too. There is so much value here I would have paid twice as much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Truly Not the music from the vinyl LP August 21, 2005
Format:Audio CD
To set the record straight, this is indeed a soundtrack. But if you were hoping this was a new CD release of the wonderful old vinyl LP entitled "Songs from 'The Jungle Book' and Other Jungle Favorites," this isn't it. A reviewer below lamented this (and another reviewer dismissed the lament, mistakenly claiming the first reviewer was thinking of a read-along storybook album...). If you, too, loved the versions and arrangements on the old song album, copies of it are still available for sale on e-Bay in its familiar vinyl format (with the orangish brown record jacket). The new CD soundtrack offers the songs as they were performed in the 1967 movie, which were fun and fine but not at all quite the same as the way these were performed by the movie's original artists for the "Songs" LP. A potential buyer with nostalgia should know the difference, so that you get what you're truly wanting to hear again. Best wishes!

3.0 out of 5 stars Jungle Book Review
A lot of the music on this CD is just instrumental as in the movie but my kids do enjoy that and I guess it fosters good imagination.
