PreSchool-K-Confined to the house on a stormy day, three children crawl through a chair-draped blanket tent and emerge in a jungle, where they cavort with several other children and some animals. When they return home through the blanket, the downpour has ended, allowing them to go outside and splash in the resultant puddles. This loosely crafted adventure focuses more on the narrative's (sometimes forced) poetic style than on the story line. As in Ska-Tat! (Macmillan, 1993), Knutson plays with word sounds ("Thum-drumming and humming and/clapping and snapping. Singing and/ringing and thumping and tapping!"). Cut-paper collage illustrations with pencil-detailed faces show joyous, energetic children of various races romping in a riot of bright colors and patterns. While the illustrations will appeal to children, the somewhat flawed text makes this an additional purchase.

Knutson's exuberant colored-pencil-and-collage illustrations transform the gloom of a confining day into colorful excitement with vari-patterned and textured papers scissored into children making music with jaguars, toucans, tree frogs, and chimpanzees in a vine-draped rain forest. In time the fantasy plays out, and the youngsters emerge from their "camp" just as the sun peeks from the clouds beckoning them outside for puddle-splashing fun. This romp in the wild is choreographed to rhymed verses that rhythmically pace the pictorial dance. Once again Kimberely Knutson has taken my two sons (7 and 3 1/2) as well as myself on a whirling, rhythmic ride of delight. Her playful rhyming approach to the wonders of imagination have provided hours of cuddling time to read her books over and over again. The illustrations come to life as our very own family room begins to transform to match the wonderous jungles in this uniquely illustrated book Jungle Jamboree. Thank you Kimberely for being the remarkable catalyst of bringing out the kid in all of us!
