i actually did not come across this cookbook untill i was about 25 years old-around 1993. it is a sweet introduction to cooking for young people (or i suppose older people who have never cooked before). it contains cooking terms like:baste,broil,dice,grate,mince,etc.-explaining how to do it. it also has a cooking utensil identification-complete with cartoon like drawings. the recipes range from beverages, main dishes, desserts, cookies, sandwiches, and breads. all the pages are illustrated fully with cute pictures and an actual diagram(using cartoons) of the mixing, baking process. in the back of the book is, "weight and measures" and "how much and how many"-a sort of way to figure out,2 tablespoons=1 ounce, etc.
sorry to say,the only recipe i ever made from this book was "sunny carrots", on page 48.( and they were gooooood.) looking at it again, the frosty lime float on page 11 looks real good to me now!!!
i recommend this cookbook for anyone really-just have some fun cooking and eating!

I got this book at age 9 when it was published in 1972 and it still sits on my countertop today. This book is great because it helps kids to make simple single dishes or an entire meal with a meat, veggie, and drink. I learned measurement conversions, and gained a love of cooking from this book. Not to mention it has the absolute best deviled egg receipe I've ever eaten! There are pictures for each ingredient in addition to the written words. And many ingredients are pre-made that can be bought at the store such as Pigs in a Blanket with hotdogs and canned biscuits. Most of the recipes are designed for adult supervision vs. intervention so it's a great way to supervise the making of something vs. having to do it for them. The whole "retro" factor is very cool as well. I hope to use it to help my grandchildren learn how to cook.

I am happy to have this book. I was given this book at age 8. I cooked many dishes from this book as a child and I am still cooking today. I purchased this copy to pass to my own child. My copy disappeared. Although it is dated it is great for young chefs.

One of the most teachable moments we often miss takes place in the kitchen, yet this cookbook has helped me recognize even if a toddle can't read he or she can still be part of the cooking experience. The fact this cookbook uses pictures, alongside of the words, has made it simple to pull out a recipe and work with my little guy! Maybe he will be a chef one day or make his partner a home cooked meal! Better Homes and Gardens Junior Cook Book
