Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Since their initial publication in the 1950s, more than 18 million copies of local Junior League cookbooks have been sold, with proceeds supporting programs that further the League's mission of improving social conditions, promoting volunteerism and developing the potential of women. This volume, part of a 100-year celebration of the Junior League (founded in 1901), is the first collection of the "best" recipes culled from books 200 League chapters and includes sidebars about the organization's history. Recipes, credited to place but not date of origin, are conventionally organized (e.g., "Party Food, Appetizers & Beverages," "Vegetables & Side Dishes") and highlight regional American specialties, with none too demanding of the busy home cook. There are plenty of meat dishes (No Peekie Roast Beefie, Austin Fajitas, New Orleans Grillades), seafood recipes (Maine Seafood Bake) and poultry (Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya; Glazed Wild Duck). Other local dishes include Hearts of Palm Swamp Cabbage, Nashville One-Pan Fudge Cake and Chocolate Bourbon Pie. Literary Guild selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, April 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Junior League Centennial Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
I'm a pretty serious cook, and have been for at least 30 years. At this point I generally buy only highly specialized or pretty esoteric cookbooks, just to learn some new area better. So it was with some hesitation that I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend last year. Let me tell you, unequivocally, that it's a real winner. It's quite clear that the women involved really tested the recipes to death, because I haven't had a clunker yet, and I must have tried at least 30 recipes since I bought it. I recommend it to everyone, regardless of his or her experience level, because none of the recipes are particularly difficult, and you are spared the worry of something turning out to taste awful, which is what usually happens when you're first learning to pick recipes. Buy it without a second thought. If you love really good food, you'll love it.

I have never found a cookbook that has SO MANY excellent recipes. I have tried recipes from almost every category and everyone has been great. These truly are some of the most treasured recipes, just like the book advertises. You're missing "a good find" if you pass over this one!
