Great intro to Junior Reid!, December 16, 2000
This review is from: Junior Reid & Bloods (Audio CD)
This album is a great introduction to Junior Reid, one of my favorite reggae artists. Though some of his recent work has been inconsistent, his voice is unmistakeable and will have you hooked. Go back and check out his work as frontman of mid-80s Black Uhuru to get a feel for where he came from, or better yet, check out a compilation of his earliest songs called "Big Timer".
But this disc is likely to remain one of your favorites for a long time. It's the perfect blend of roots and dancehall, spiritual and exciting and endlessly replayable. As if that weren't enough, you get an introduction to some lesser known reggae artists as well as some veteran collaborators such as Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and Michael Rose. The song featuring the latter, "Burning Down," is one of my favorite reggae songs of all time as it features two of my favorite singers and bursts with the alternating energy of their unique deliveries.
Buy this CD and hear what "dancehall stylee" meant before it got innundated with sex and violence, when it was rough and exciting but still about peace and love. You won't regret it!
