Book Description

Combat Aircraft October 20, 2009
This volume follows the Luftwaffe's twin-engined Wunderbomber southwards to describe its deployment in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater during World War II (1939-1945), from the Straits of Gibraltar in the west, via the beleaguered island of Malta, to the Aegean and the Suez Canal in the east. It is a story of two distinct parts - the initial lightning successes, and then the long, slow process of retreat and defeat. It began early in 1941 with the first sporadic air raids on Malta, followed in the spring by the campaign in the Balkans which resulted in the conquests of Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete. After supporting land operations in North Africa during the latter half of 1941, the Ju 88s resumed their assault on Malta.

Such was their decline, however, that by the final month of the war there was just one machine left in the Mediterranean - an improved model Ju 188, which was used to drop Axis agents behind the Allied lines in Italy. Bringing the story to life are personal accounts of some of the more famous actions - the bombing of the evacuation shipping off the coast of Greece and the sinking of three Royal Navy destroyers south of Crete by the renowned 'Helbig Flyers' of LG 1, all illustrated with rare photographs and full color profiles.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A solid pick for such [military history] collections... John Weal's Junkers JU 88 Kampfgeschwader in North Africa and the Mediterranean, telling of the history of the twin-engined bomber that performed as a bomber, reconnaissance platform, and fighter. Any library strong in aircraft development will find this a specialized winnger, as well." -The Bookwatch (January 2010)

"The author does a super job of covering the history and operations of the various Ju-88 units that were sent to the Mediterranean... This is further enhanced by a superb selection of period photos and the profiles done by the author. There are a number of very interesting and unusual camouflage schemes carried by the Ju-88s of this area of operations, making this a book that modelers as well as those who just like the aircraft will come to covet and enjoy. It is a book that I definitely enjoyed reading and is one I know you will like as well." -Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness / www.modelingmadness.com (February 2010)

4.0 out of 5 stars The Schnellbomber Astride the Med!, January 16, 2010
This review is from: Junkers Ju 88 Kampfgeschwader in North Africa and the Mediterranean (Combat Aircraft) (Paperback)
John Weal summarizes the combat record of the Junkers 88 over the Med and North Africa in this Osprey 'Combat Aircraft' volume, #75 in the series. First committed to action in late 1941, the Schnellbomber would score many successes; pounding Malta almost to submission, savaging Allied convoys and lending support to the Africa Korps. As recounted in Weal's book, during its glory days over the Med, the Ju 88 was an adversary to be feared.

Several units featured prominently in Med/North Africa ops, specifically LG 1, KG 54 and KG 77. Weal interweaves each wing's combat career together as the Luftwaffe fed more and more Ju 88 units into the theater to aid in the effort to bomb Malta into submission, assist German forces in Greece, Yugoslavia, North Africa, etc., stop Allied reinforcement convoys and so on. Despite some spectacular successes, such as the devastating raids on Piraeus and Bari, by summer 1944, Ju 88 units had been been chased from the Med.

Although Weal only has 72 pages to cover three years of action spread across a wide geographic area, he provided an informative overview of Ju 88 ops. The strategical and tactical missions flown by Ju 88 units and the contributions those missions made to German victories are nicely detailed.

Over 90 photographs are included along with 10 pages of color profiles that show the varied - and sometimes striking - camouflage schemes worn by Ju 88 units.

As a comprehensive, nicely-illustrated and inexpensive summary of Junkers 88 combats in the Mediterranean, Weal's book is hard to beat. One thing I've always wondered though. The cover blurb on Weal mentions his "huge archive" of original German-language WWII literature which includes "individual combat reports." Given that material, how come he never uses such reports to liven up his text with some first-person reminiscences? Recommended.

**
NB. Great cover artwork by Wiek Luijken! I hope Osprey continues to use him; he's good.
