5.0 out of 5 stars Jupiter DiMedici 1011 = great flute, September 7, 2010
This review is from: Jupiter 1011 Artist Series Flute 1011RBS - Inline G
I am a professional flutist and teacher with a doctorate in flute performance.

I find the Jupiter 1011 flute to be simply a great flute - wonderful scale (modified Bennett scale at 442), great smooth mechanism, with a wonderful assortment of quality headjoints (esp. D1, D3, and D4 - silver or gold-plated).

I currently have 2 1011 bodies and a 711 body which share 8 different HJs including 1 gold-plated (lip plate) 711, 1 silver D1, 2 D3 silver, 1 goldplated (lip plate) D3, 1 silver D4, 1 gold-plated (lip plate) D4, and 1 grenadilla wood Chi HJ. The various HJs allow me to match my sound to the volume level and level of projection needed for the music and the ensemble without having to alter my manner of playing. I play in several settings which require a soft dynamic level, plus several that require a louder soloistic sound.

The method that I teach is described in my doctoral essay, "A Description and Aplication of Robert Aitken's Concept of the Physical Flute." The Jupiter flutes from the 511 series on up allow my students to play in the manner described in my book. In fact, the Jupiters require that the flutist perform a certain way to obtain an optimal sound. One cannot force the sound on the Jupiter, but must play in a relaxed, open fashion to sound good. Sometimes, a student, who has worked really hard to get a bad flute to sound good, will sound tinny and very bright when switching to a Jupiter - until the student learns to relax and open up physically.

I also have a great Cooper-scale Powell that I very seldom use anymore due to my satisfaction with the Jupiter 1011. Suffice to say that the Jupiters play in a similar fashion to the great Boston flutes which cost about $10,000 more. BTW, the 911 with a plated body plays just as well as the 1011.

One of the nice things about the sound of the Jupiter is that it sounds good close up. Most of the great flutes don't sound good until you get into a fairly large space. Their HJs are made primarily for orchestral work and are not close focusing. Once I started playing with the 711 and D3 headjoints in small concert venues, I began getting compliments on the purity of my sound.

I give the Jupiter flute a resounding five stars!

BTW - For those interested in the DiMedici line of Jupiters, I recommend the D1, the D3, and the D4 HJs over the D2 or the D6.

I personally already own the same model of this flute. It's got wonderful tone, and a clear crisp sound. I would recommend this model to anyone looking for a good professional flute to have. A very nice flute.
