I was introduced to Jupiter in the early 90's when I just had to stop playing the Vito alto I was playing. There is a shop in Raleigh called Marsh Woodwinds, where I get my repair work done and buy accessories. Jupiter was his newest client and he gave me a great deal on any horn in the store (Rodney and I go back a few years). So I play-tested the Jupiter line.

The brass versions were no better than student line models at best. They were tinny and didn't hold up in the lower ranges. The black lacquer models were quite nice, with a deep rich range through all octaves. It had a fabulous appearance as well.

This particular model had a marvelous tone and a richness that only silver can deliver. The key actions were easy to manipulate and allowed me to maneuver from note-to-note effortlessly. It has a stunning appearance, but it played very, very well. This horn easily stands in the same light as a Yamaha 62 or comparable horn.

I know there are those who don't put a lot of stock in Taiwanese horns, but this horn (along with the Cannonball alto line) is the obvious exception. I highly recommend this as a great horn for someone on a budget. It's worth a play-test at the very least. I'm sure you'll be as surprised as I was at how well made it is, along with its playability and tonal quality.

By the way, and to be honest, I bought the black lacquer model based on looks alone. It matched my black Yamaha tenor. Frankly, I couldn't have gone wrong either way.
