The texts, printed in large, well-leaded type, read smoothly; the illustrations, also large, are nearly all crisply reproduced, enhanced-color photos. The back matter includes books, Web sites, and fact summaries. Considering the astronomical speed at which our knowledge of the universe is expanding, these titles will make timely additions to any collections serving young readers who prefer their nonfiction in straight shots, unmixed with plot lines or wisecracks.
