A brief video to show the machine, coffee compartment, water tank, making coffee, and emptying the grounds and drip trays.

We really love this machine because we love great coffee but we don't make frothy milk drinks. This machine produces very, very good coffee from scratch at the push of a button, automatically grinding the beans pumping through hot water and dumping out the "puck" of coffee grounds into the internal bin. It's a nice compact size and fits easily on a counter under the cabinets.

We bought this to replace another Jura machine we have had for the past 10 years, which after many thousands of cups of coffee started to leak and get a bit temperamental. The Micro ENA-1 is smaller and cheaper than that older model, but produces the same great (maybe even greater) coffee.

Update August 2014

We have now owned the Ena 1 for about 16 months and really love it. It has worked flawlessly, other than for the minor "empty the container" light sometimes coming on too early (but this has not gotten any worse since we bought it, and is a minor annoyance). We have compared the coffee it makes to the coffee shop where we buy the beans. With the same beans I think our machine produces consistently better coffee. Sometimes, with a good barista, they MAY do better, but the Ena 1 produces the same great cup every time. We would definitely buy the same machine again.

Original Review - with minor corrections/updates:

We bought the Jura Ena 1 about two weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. It makes a great cup of coffee, and is super easy to use. Although the machine (on the outside) is all plastic, it appears to be all high-quality parts that fit together perfectly and seem well made. We compared this machine to the DeLonghi ESAM 3300 before buying it (on-line, not "in person"). Although the ESAM 3300 was significantly less expensive, we were a bit concerned about the quality. There were several reviews that mentioned quality problems, and many talked about very poor customer service. So we decided to pay a bit more for the Swiss-designed Jura machine, hoping that the Swiss attention to detail would pay off for us. Since we did not want cappuccinos, we also reasoned that this machine being solely aimed at making coffee/espresso was simpler and possibly less likely to break. As I mentioned, the machine appears to be very well made. I am impressed by the precision and quality of the parts that you can see.

To start, if you are shopping for an espresso machine with and attached steam wand, this doesn't have one. So if that is a must-have feature for you, this machine doesn't have it. However if you're shopping for a machine that makes a perfect shot of espresso using freshly ground beans for every cup, while taking up as little space as possible, this Jura Ena Micro 1 might just be what you're looking for.

Compact Design:
While the size is compact (for an espresso machine of this quality), it's still very heavy. In the video, you can see I have my Breville BKC700XL Gourmet Single-Serve Coffeemaker set up next to it, and the Breville is slightly similar in size. The Jura is definitely longer than the Breville, and when I lifted them both (empty), the Jura outweighed the Breville several times over. So you will need a deep and sturdy surface to set this espresso machine one. It would fit perfectly on a kitchen counter, without taking up nearly as much space as many of the other larger models.

As mentioned before, this model does not have a steaming wand. The lack of an attached wand actually helps add to the Ena Micro 1's less bulky design. This is a plus for those who don't use the wand on a regular machine, those needing to use as little counter space as possible, or those who have their own separate milk frothers already.

Set up:
Setting this machine was fairly simple. I used the included instructional booklet and found the steps clear and easy to understand. The machine goes through a very short cleansing process the first time you turn it on for use, so reading the directions will help aid you through the steps. There is an included water filter, and taped to the inside of the "welcome kit" box, is a water hardness test strip.

The Jura Ena Micro 1 is one of the most satisfying purchases I have made in years. While relatively expensive, it effortlessly makes an excellent cup of coffee.

The biggest challenge I had in purchasing an espresso machine at my chosen price point was deciding between a simple automatic machine like the Jura and a manual machine with a built in milk steamer. I opted for the automatic route and probably drink twice as much coffee as a result.

The other espresso maker I seriously considered is the Breville 870, which is an excellent manual machine with built in milk steamer. I used it this summer while staying at my parent's house. This experience with the 870 convinced me of the importance of grinding coffee immediately before brewing. Freshly ground beans taste so much better.

My only beef with the 870 is that it wasn't fully automatic. Although I enjoyed the ritual of pushing the grind button, tamping down the grounds, and locking the portafilter in place, I grew tired of cleaning up the grounds that slipped over the edge of the portafilter and then washing down the parts of the machine where coffee had dripped during the brewing process. These are very minor annoyances if you only drink one or two cups of coffee a day, but add up to a more material annoyance with each additional cup. Also, manual machines like the 870 are far more dependent on the skills of the barista to make a good cup of coffee.

The Jura, on the other hand, is dead simple to operate. User error is nearly impossible. Each cup of coffee is consistently excellent and incredibly easy to make. Just push a button and enjoy.

The only negative I can find with the Jura is the relatively small size of the water tank. I often have to fill it up more than once a day.
