Product Description

The perfect temperature: Coffee tastes its best when served hot. That's why all professionals work with correctly pre-warmed cups as a matter of principle. If hot coffee is poured into cold porcelain cups, a lot of heat is lost. Too much, in fact. In pre-warmed cups, however, the mouthwatering aroma is released in its entirety. With the elegant, slim cup warmer, JURA offers the ideal accessory for any automatic speciality coffee machine. Two heating elements constantly keep the cups at a temperature of approximately 55°C / 131 °F – ideal for preparing a fiery espresso or a cappuccino topped with milk foam. This makes it an absolute must for all coffee connoisseurs.

When the first cup warmer arrived, I set it up in the kitchen to heat my espresso cups. After an hour of heating, the cups felt just lukewarm. Surprisingly, they did not seem to warm enough to make any difference for the coffee. I also found that the machine had a jammed timer button, so I returned it attributing the defect to poor construction.

The second cup warmer arrived intact. I set it up in the kitchen. The cups felt lukewarm again, so I checked the Jura-Capresso website; it said the cup warmer heats cups to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. I put a thermometer in with the cups to see how warm they got. After heating for an hour, the thermometer read 110 degrees Fahrenheit. I tried another thermometer and heated the cups later that day and again the next day for an hour each time. The thermometer warmed to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, just lukewarm to the touch. I returned the second machine.

It is hard to believe a company cannot build a cup warmer to reach a specified temperature. But this cup warmer is built using thin, translucent plastic sides. Thin plastic seems a poor choice for a warming device, both because it allows heat to escape and because it gives a feel of poor engineering. Bottom line: the cup warmer does not do what it says it does.

I splurged on a Jura coffee making machine about a year ago. Then I remodeled my kitchen, converting a mud room into a walk in pantry plus coffee bar. Turns out it gets REALLY cold in there in the winter (I live in Vermont) and our coffee cups/mugs were nasty cold in the morning. I figured someone must sell something to solve this problem & sure enough, I found the Jura cup warmer. Frankly, I thought I was crazy shelling out another $300 (ouch) just to warm my cup before brewing the morning coffee. But after just one morning of nicely warmed cups, I was sold (as was everyone else in the house).

Pros: toasty warm cups --- no more running hot water in a cup 1st, simple to set up, auto on/off timer
Semi-Cons: my husband likes hefty mugs - we can just barely fit 4 of the mugs he prefers + 2 of my cups in the drawers. This isn't a big con, but more a warning for folks who like hefty mugs.
To-be-Determined: not sure how this will work in the summer months. The brochure says the perfect temp for a coffee cup is something like 55* C ... so I'm thinking I won't be using this unit in the summer when room temp is 70+? Still, even if not used for a few months, this is still an extravagant ... but much enjoyed --- adder to my coffee bar.

(p.s. I Corrected/updated this review once a reader pointed out the correct temp is 55* C, not Farenheit.)

I will be honest, you don't NEED this. But if you do decide to spend the money... it's worth it!

Finally gave in and bought the cup warmer-glad I did! It enables me to enjoy a hotter coffee product which stays hot longer and is especially nice when serving guests. I have dinner parties and serve whatever guests want-espresso, cappuccino etc. Beverages are served hot even with the delay of putting them on a tray to serve or running into the dining room or deck.
Certainly much easier and more convenient than other methods to pre-warm the cups.
I have the Jura J9 and enjoy both items and I am sorry I didn't buy the warmer at the same time I bought the espresso machine a year ago.

Heating the cups makes a world of difference! It isn't a necessity but as one reviewer stated, it completes the experience. Programmable turn on and off assures the cups are warm before you make your first cup of coffee. The finish matches Jura's other products and looks nice next to the coffee machine. I have three regular mugs in each drawer and this has freed up space in the cabinets. I only wish I had gotten this sooner.
