It works just fine, thanks!,

This review is from: Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder Bundle (Kitchen)
I don't understand why this grinder had gotten such bad reviews! I purchased this along with my Capresso 303.01 espresso machine. I love this brand, I think they make quality products! The complaints on noise are ridiculous, it's a coffee grinder! They're all loud and noisy, this one is no exception, nor is it the loudest I've heard. The settings work great, the timer works great (though most of the time, I just set it on the longest time and manually turn it off when I see that I've got enough grinds). I can get everything from fine for espresso to course for my french press. I have no problems with the setting switch moving on me either. Because this isn't a conical burr grinder, I do get instances where the beans aren't falling into the chute and the machine makes that empty noise, but it's nothing a quick tap on the side doesn't fix. One reviewer mentioned that they needed a lot of beans to weigh it enough for the beans to fall into the chute. I usually only grind enough for myself, and don't have a lot of problem with putting in just a few scoops at a time. Again, nothing a quick tap or two to the machine won't fix. I think this is also fairly common with a lot of grinders, not specific to this machine. And the clogging. Perhaps having worked at several coffee shops prepped me for this - but I clean out the chute after every use or every other use. It's not a hassle to me, it takes just a minute to put it next to my sink, jiggle the brush around in there and tap it out over the sink. I do it when I'm waiting for my coffee to brew, and I've done this since I got the machine and have not had any issue with clogging. For the price point, I think this is an excellent and good looking machine that I would recommend. If you truly wanted something that performed at a higher standard, then you need to be willing to invest more money. December 28, 2011 - I've now had this grinder for a year and I am a heavy coffee drinker so this gets lots of use. I still have had NO problems with this wonderful machine! I am still inclined to believe many of the complaints are due to user error. The noise level of the grinding hasn't increased or decreased. The setting switch hasn't started to slip on me. No clogging in the chute (and I have since gotten rather lazy and do not clean after every use anymore - more like once a week or so). I use this for everything from my espresso machine, to a french press, to a regular auto drip.

Capresso 580 - Disappointing,
By
This review is from: Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder Bundle (Kitchen)
I recently purchased a new Capresso 580 and I am very disapointed. I would recommend spending more money to get a better functioning burr grinder.
The 3 main problems: 1. The coffee chute below the grinder collects about 33% of the grounds everytime I grind beans. In other words, it seems about 2 teaspoons end up jammed into the chute for every two tablespoons I grind. One reviewer suggested tapping the sides and another recommended grinding to empty (e.g. only fill with the whole beans you need). Neither of these tips worked for me. The only thing that works is a combination of brushing with the supplied brush (which gets out the loose coffee) and then inserting your finger up the chute and scraping out all the compacted grounds. Very messy and extremely wasteful. 2. The fine/course dial shifts towards course as you grind (from the grinding pressure). I keep an eye on it and either push it back when it shifts or just hold it where I like it. 3. The grounds container has a nice tight fit but it can be hard to remove. It takes a firm grip and good finger pressure to pull it out. It is silly because the container has a perfect grip built in, but that perfect grip is pushed inside the housing so it is of no use for removal. There is just a small plastic ridge on a curving surface to get a grip on. If your finger strength is weak or if you have arthritis, forget about using this machine.

Hope you don't like French Roast,
By Dante (Corvallis, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder Bundle, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I have a love-hate relationship with this Burr grinder. I love the action of the Burr grinder, I love the timer (and agree with the previous comment about the air raid siren), and I love the various grind options, but this particular grinder does not do well with oily beans. After two weeks of owning the grinder, the thing was totally clogged and that wimpy, little brush isn't going to do it. It took me an hour with a large, stretched out paper clip to get the inside of the grinder cleaned out. Now, I must clean it out every day to keep it clog free. I'm not willing to give up my French Roast coffee beans. To clean, I have to unplug the unit, stick my finger up the shoot to try to get all compacted grounds out of the shoot. Then I stick the little brush up until it can reach into bean cylinder. Because of the ground coffee that stays behind in the shoot, the ground coffee quantity is never the same. I use the timer on the full time (40 seconds) twice to get the quantity that I want. I also weigh it to make sure it's in the ball park. I would not recommend this product. Grinding coffee shouldn't be this difficult.

Not a good buy!,

This review is from: Capresso 580.01 Disk Burr Grinder, Black (Kitchen)
My wife purchased this for me for a present. First of all, the quality of the grind was so so. I wasn't very impressed but it was a present so I made happy. Second, the grinder lasted all of two weeks. The company said we had to ship it back to them on our nickel and when they determined if it was our fault or product malfunction they would send a replacement. Expect 6-8 weeks. Customer service was not very helpful. We sent it back and got no response for weeks and weeks. I then found out we were suppose to wait for a RA to be mailed to us (which we never received) and so they could not process the return even with all of our information in the box with the grinder. All in all, we are out all of the money and no grinder...

PLASTIC BURR? Really?,
This review is from: Capresso 580.01 Disk Burr Grinder, Black (Kitchen)
I bought one of these about a year ago, and it lasted about 2 months. I figured I must have not cleared out the grinds often enough or something, but it quit working. So I returned it for a new one, which lasted for about 7 months of daily use. What was happening was that it would all of a sudden stop taking beans down into the grinder and the motor would start whirring louder and at a higher pitch. I cleaned the chute out with the brush until there were no more grinds inside. So I took a closer look at the burr- the PLASTIC part had worn away! I guess if I could buy a burr replacement the problem would be solved for a few months, but for the money I paid (full price at Crate & Barrel when it was a new model) I expect better quality.

Works Well for French Press (coarse) grinds,
By
This review is from: Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder Bundle (Kitchen)
We use a French press to make our coffee, so we want a uniform, coarse grind. This grinder fits the bill at a very reasonable price, and our morning cuppa is noticably better than when we use a blade grinder. (Of course the biggest improvements were 1) going from ground coffee to whole bean, and 2) going from any kind of drip to the French press. But there is still improvement to be had.) If that's all you need, don't bother to spend more for one that can do espresso grinds and drip grinds and all the rest that others report struggling with in using this machine. Yes, it's loud--but not an order of magnitude louder than any other burr grinder I have experienced (they are ALL loud).

Capresso 580.01,
By
This review is from: Capresso 580.01 Disk Burr Grinder, Black (Kitchen)
This is an excellent grinder, very little static electricity, but on fine grinds it needs to be cleaned frequently. I replaced another Capresso after about 14 years of service. I'm quite pleased with this one. The timer is pretty accurate for the number of cups you want to grind and it seems sturdier than the one I replaced. I expect it to last.

Update (R.I.P.),
By Gerry T. (N.H.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Capresso 580.01 Disk Burr Grinder, Black (Kitchen)
** UPDATE **Almost 18 months to the day, my Capresso ginder went kaput! Over its life span, I ground two cups of coffee per day. I called and the rep gave me two options. I could get my unit repaired for $30 + pay for 1-way shipping or I could order a current model for $60 w/ free shipping. I chose a third option that the rep did not discuss. I went out and bought a Cuisinart model DBM-8. Grinds much finer than the Capresso; the shute is more direct to the cannister and much easier to clean; an additional benefit is that there is extremely little, almost no, static. A bit of the grinds collect on the sides of the cannister BUT you don't get the coffee grounds flying all over the counter top because of the static build-up.

Buyer Beware!!,
By
This review is from: Jura-Capresso 585.05 Disk Burr Grinder Bundle (Kitchen)
Don't buy this product! In fact, stay away from all Capresso products!! We bought this grinder along with the Capresso 10 cup coffee maker. One year and one month after the purchase, the coffee maker stopped working. I had to send it in for repairs at a cost of $40.
Two months later, the grinder stopped working. I shook out over 1/2 pound of coffee from the guts of this machine and there is still more in there. The lever controlling the amount that is ground never worked properly. How this company stays in business is beyond me. |
