Amazon.com Review

An earthquake has destroyed all the stored dinosaur DNA at Jurassic Park. Hop in your SUV, find living dinosaur specimens on the island, collect their DNA, and bring it back to the Command Center to make sure that future generations of dinosaurs thrive on the island.

That's the concept behind Jurassic Park III: Danger Zone, a Jurassic Park-themed board game for your computer. Designed for one or two players, ages 7 and older, the board game style will be familiar to nearly anyone who has ever played Monopoly or Sorry! (or more recently, Mario Party).

Kids under age 10 will probably enjoy the variety of challenges and obstacles in the game. Challenges generally involve either tests of dinosaur knowledge or arcade-style mini-games like sneaking past a Tyrannosaurus, battling with raptors, or shooting dinosaurs with DNA darts on a firing range.

Unfortunately, older kids and adults might not be as keen on it. After a couple of games many of the challenges get repetitive, and the sheer randomness of some parts of the game will bore adults far faster than kids. Younger kids probably won't be put off by this, but parents playing along will have to appreciate the quality time with their children more than the game itself.

Even though our test computer was beyond recommended minimums, lag times reigned before and after each mini-game. The intro animations were fun the first few times, but long. You can click to skip them, but then the screen freezes while the game loads from the CD. This amounts to spending a lot of time clicking through repetitive screens, then waiting a few seconds--click, wait, click, wait. This gets old by the third or fourth time you play a particular mini-game.

Still, if your kid is between ages 7 and 10 and crazy about Jurassic Park, he or she will probably want to spend a lot of time with this game. Parents might be less entranced after a couple of times around, but the single-player version will keep your dino-nut busy for hours. --Jeff Quick

Product Information

An earthquake has destroyed allthe stored dinosaur DNA at Jurassic Park. Hop in your SUV, find living dinosaur specimens on the island, collect their DNA, and bring it back to the Command Center to make sure that future generations of dinosaurs thrive on the island.

Jurassic Park III: Danger Zone! contains obstacle courses, hazards, dinosaurs, and mini-games designed to challenge one or two players as they explore the secrets of Jurassic Park. As players negotiate their 4 x 4 vehicle through the island's mainscreen obstacle course, they initiate arcade-style mini-games by landing on challenge spaces.  Each player begins the game with 300 points, which are used to buy health kits, tires for the SUV, a helicopter ride, or an extra turn to try and tagdinosaur DNA. Collecting four dinosaur DNA samples qualifies you for entry into the Jurassic Park laboratories where you can clone up to seven different types of dinosaurs and print them out. Mystery cards drawn during the challenges increase ordecrease the number of points.  Up to a dozen specialized supplies can be carried by each player and include items like bug spray, rope, free repair or rescue, narrow escape, batteries, and so forth. Mini-games offer a diverse range of challengesfrom timed runs to sneaking past a Tyrannosaurus Rex to gather supplies. Hazards like mud pits, dinosaur dung, traps, and quicksand can be avoided by paying points, using the correct supplies, or luck.

Hurry, before time runs out - and ofJurassic Park!

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger Zone RULES!, July 17, 2001

This is one of the coolest games you will ever play. It's like a board game but everywhere you land there's a different game. Lots of the games are freak out scary like the movie. You have to fix a fence before a raptor catches up and kills you! You have to sneak past a T-rex and if you don't make it you get eaten alive! The dinosaurs are totally realistic. And the dueling dinosaurs game RULES!

2.0 out of 5 stars fun for kids.., July 6, 2001

This review is from: Jurassic Park 3 Danger Zone (CD-ROM)
This game is for 7+ years, it says violence on the box, but there really is none. It's basically like a board game, with one or 2 players. The graphics are okay.. and it has a couple of fun mini games on the board. The only one I hate is the one where you have to play a dinosaur and fight another player. This game pops up way too much on the screen and gets really boring after a while. Other then that you get to match dinosaur bones, retrieve things and shoot dinosaurs to get their DNA, since the lab was destroyed and the scientists need more. So I think it's a fun game.. except that one mini game where you fight a dinosaur one on one with another player or a computer player pops up WAY too much.. and I just think that part is really stupid because none of the other games pop up that much, and the other ones are funner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool Game, July 18, 2001

Awesome graphics and lots of mini-games. Me and my friends love to play this game together. Herding Raptors, sneaking past the TRex in T-Rex Extreme and Raging Raptors are my favorites. The dinos, especially the T-Rex and Raptors, are just like the movie.
