Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

While the Jurassic era of dinosaurs may have been quite a few years ago, kids can now discover this lost era and help scientists bring the extinct beasts back to life. From the folks at Brighter Minds comes a game about researching and collecting dinosaurs--specifically aimed at the younger crowd of 6 to 12 year olds. If you have an older child already familiar with these creatures and if they have a younger sibling who can’t pronounce even one, they will both be able to play and learn with this DVD game.

The researchers on Isla Sorna are trying to round up samples of 25 dinosaurs so that they may bring them back to life. It’s up to players--using the Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Pteranodon, and Triceratops movers--to capture these oversized lizards and birds for the sake of science. Gathering dino DNA is done through rolling the die, moving that number of spaces on the game board, and then seeing which of the seven "mini-games" you’ll need to win. These games come on the included DVD with you controlling the action via remote control, and challenges range from being the first to identify a slowly appearing dinosaur and digging up bones to answering trivia questions and correctly lining up body parts of the breeds.

Bone Dig game
Find five bones in a set number of turns at the dig site.

The game’s graphics are beautifully detailed--from the dinosaur fact cards and the sturdy game board to the DVD’s content. Clips from all three Jurassic Park movies, never-before-seen animation clips, and more than 300 trivia questions keep this game entertaining for more than just a few rounds. Allowing fossil fans to find and clone the beasts of yore is just an added bonus.

Plains game
In the Plains you must name the dinosaur slowly emerging from the fog before time runs out and opponents have a chance to guess.

Probably the greatest thing about this game, though, is its versatility. While it includes four player pieces, you can play alone, with up to four individual players, or with teams. You can also choose to not use the game board by following what Brighter Minds calls the "In the Car" instructions. (As this implies, this game can be used on portable or in-car DVD players as well, making it a great traveling game or time-filler in between errand stops.) There are also three different skill levels--scout, tracker, and paleontologist--that allow kids (or adults) who may not be as familiar with the creatures to play at an easier level, while someone with more knowledge can participate in the same game at a harder level, evening the playing field some. Lastly, you can choose to play a short or long version of the game by determining at the beginning of the game how many dinosaurs a player needs to collect in order claim victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Playing With Dinosaurs, September 18, 2007
This review is from: Jurassic Park Explorer DVD Game (Toy)
Somebody must've figured out all the bugs in these DVD games, because my kids and I have been playing this one for the past month and it's worked perfectly.

The game is all about dinosaurs, so it's fun and educational (always a huge plus). It doesn't matter if your kids are familiar with the 1993 movie from Steven Spielberg. There are references to the island, and one quiz includes film clips, but you don't need prior knowledge of the film story.

The basic premise is that each player or team must help the scientists to explore the island, excavate bones, and even create dinosaurs. Most of the action is controlled with the DVD remote. There are seven different games and puzzles on the disc, all easily played by my kids. Their favorites included the maze and the dinosaur lab.

The beauty of this game is that each player can pick a difficulty level, so the whole family can play without the little ones feeling left out. I found the expert level, which I played at, to be a real challenge. Which probably explains why my kids keep beating me. I need to read up on my dinosaurs.

The other great thing about this game is that the little magic elves who live inside the DVD player keep track of each player's turn and points. I don't know how they do that, but it sure is a nice feature.

If you have dino-crazy kids, this is the perfect game for them. It's absolutely packed with dinosaur facts and trivia. It's recommended for kids as young as six. That sounds about right, as my 6-year-old daughter has enjoyed playing it as much as her 9-year-old brother.

Full disclosure, this is my first DVD game - probably my last as well. My son loves dinosaurs and is a big fan of all the Jurassic Park movies so I had high hopes for this product.

The game is structured efficiently for 4 players and the instructions on the DVD make sense. The game also includes a playing board, die and moving pieces. It was not immediately obvious (and still isn't) how these fit into the game. Oh well.

The game itself is filled with cut-scenes and detail about dinosaurs. These are integrated in a way that largely kills the momentum of the game. Some of the "tasks" are fun, some are not. I think if you like the pacing of professional baseball you will like this game :)
