From the Inside Flap

Rick Walton Illustrated by Mike Gordon and Carl Gordon

When a little boy goes to the big city for the first time, he wants to do everything he can. He goes to a play, a museum, a professional baseball game, and even joins a parade. He just happens to be accompanied by a very large and unusual group of friends-RATS!

/p>

Conjunctions are used to link words, phrases, and clauses, and we use them every day. Author Rick Walton knows, and he's delivered another delightful children's book in his language arts series to teach budding new readers all about them!

Rick Walton is the author of more than 70 books for kids. He lives with his wife and five children in a home on a hillside, where raccoons climb up his trees and deer graze under his bushes. Rick likes to travel around the country talking to kids. You can find out more about Rick at www.rickwalton.com.

Mike Gordon, born in Manchester, England, became a professional freelance artist in 1983. Mike has now completed over 600 picture books.

Carl Gordon and his father have been a team since 1999. Mike creates the line illustrations, and the color is applied by Carl using a graphics tablet and computer. He has a degree in graphic art and currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa with his wife and kids.

More About the Author

Rick Walton first thought of writing for children when his high school English teacher, Joyce Nelson, told him that a story he had written for the class would make a good children's book. But it wasn't until after he had dabbled in business, law, teaching, software design, and almost every other career in the book, he finally realized that writing for kids was one of the few things that he both enjoyed and was good at. Since then Rick has had over ninety books published. His works include picture books, riddle books, activity books, mini-mysteries, a collection of poetry, and educational and game software. His books have been featured on the IRA Children's Choice list, Reading Rainbow, and on CBS This Morning. Rick teaches university courses on picture book writing and on the children's book publishing industry.

I'm a third grade teacher and I bought this book to use as a mentor text for teaching my students to combine short sentences into longer, more meaningful sentences. I read the book to the class first so they could concentrate on the hilarious text and illustrations. Then I read it again a few days later so that the class could pay attention to the conjunctions used in the text. They loved it, remembered all the conjunctions, and were able to accurately complete an activity where they selected conjunctions to combine two shorter sentences. The book is now displayed on a shelf in the room for students to use as a reference when they get stuck writing their own great sentences. Great book for reading and great mentor text.

Conjunctions are connectors like nails, screws, or hinges. They're joiners too, though they don't belong to many clubs or societies. These nondescript, common words are overlooked yet essential pieces of our language. Are they fun? Usually not, but Rick Walton's tale of conjunctions and rats illustrates the FUNction of these oft used words in a fun and entertaining way. On each page a sentence begins, stops at the conjunction point, and is completed on the following page. The scenes of thousands of rats swarming where they don't belong are outrageous and certainly could be appealing to young readers.

This punctuation book rates an easy five stars.

NOTE - Conjunctions do NOT cause conjunctivitis.

Disclaimer - After years of interactions with my daughter's pet rats, I have a soft spot in my heart for those furry rodents.

This is such a silly book and a great way to illustrate the idea of using conjunctions especially for young children. I teach first grade and this is a neat way to illustrate this concept to them!
