5.0 out of 5 stars A benchmark for the next evolution in protection, August 11, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Just 2 Seconds (Paperback)
Gavin DeBecker burst onto the mainstream scene with his groundbreaking work 'The Gift of Fear.' DeBecker and Associates have shaken the firmament again with 'Just 2 Seconds.' Just as one cannot go to a serious training event today and not escape a reference to 'The Gift of Fear,' one will not be able to train next year and escape a reference to this new work.

The value of this work is threefold. First, the essential lessons of their extensive research are distilled and well presented in the first part of the book. Leveraging their previous work, and referencing other luminaries in the field of combat psychology (i.e. Col Grossman), the chapters are well delineated and the topics are well beyond those normally found in Protection 101. For example, discussion on Zen and the Art of Protection (ZAP) is not something found elsewhere, and yet is deadly serious.

Second, insights into DeBecker and Associates' own training academy are given to provide a foil for professionals in the protection field to compare/contrast their own programs to. One's own training may be better, worse, or different, but examination allows for a reevaluation of the 'why' behind the 'what and how.' It also gives insight into how the conclusions of their work are translated into practice.

Finally, the compendium provides the research material that supports the conclusions in the first chapters. This alone is amazing, since it is the first summary of attacks against principles (over a 40 year timespan) that I have ever seen.

This is not a beginner's book. Someone interested in protection will not find this a Protection 101 skillset reference. However, make no mistake. This is Protection 521 - this is the graduate material. I firmly believe that 'Just 2 Seconds' will quickly become the new equivalent to the 'Book of Five Rings' for those in the field. It cannot be too highly recommended, and likely those already in possession will be very reluctant to lend out their copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy if you don't work in the business (but 5 stars if you do), December 31, 2010

I bought this after buying The Gift of Fear. For a lay person, The Gift of Fear is a better book. The data in Just 2 Seconds takes up at least half of the book and the rest of it is a very technical analysis of what the data shows: what are the exact steps necessary to protect someone, what you can do to increase your odds under specific circumstances, etc. Make no mistake: it's a fascinating read, just that the lay person isn't its audience. I would have preferred to know that before purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential guide for protectors of at-risk people, July 24, 2008
This review is from: Just 2 Seconds (Paperback)
After reading the first paragraph, I was drawn in and found it hard to stop reading. This book presents many new insights on public figure attacks (both successful and unsuccessful) and provides a wealth of information for individuals in public figure protection.

It is definitely a great read, coming from experts in the field and pioneers of executive protection. Also very interesting is the compendium of over 400 pages of summarized attacks, near attacks and global incidents from the last 45 plus years. It's a great reference source!

Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the violence expert!, February 2, 2010
This review is from: Just 2 Seconds (Paperback)
As a retired crime prevention officer and instructor, I have read all of Gavin De Becker's books and implemented his recommendations in my teachings. He, once again, has hot the mark by making his readers understand how and why things work the way that they do. Just as "Protecting the Gift" is a must-read for ALL parents, "Just 2 Seconds" is a must for all who are tasked with crime prevention and education. (from Daniel J. Burns, The Crime Guru)

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading, May 9, 2011

This book should be a required read for any person contemplating working, actively working or long time working in the security field. It definitely should be read by all professionals in the executive protection and diplomatic protection services. In my opinion this book would help anyone be more aware and cognizant of developing situations around them. It is textbook like, but still pulls the reader along to explore each case and instance given by Mr. DeBecker. This paired with The Gift of Fear will open your eyes and liberate your natural insticts. Great read, great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the Book, See for Yourself, August 5, 2008

I recently finished reading this compelling book and found it very insightful on the world of executive protection. It illustrates where security details have failed and unfortunately some very famous principals have paid with their life.

It is a must read for anyone in the business of protecting people and also is a good read for history buffs. From the most well-known assassinations to attempts that were foiled, each scenario is analyzed and broken down for the layman. I am former military and fairly new to the executive protection business and definitely feel that I came away with something after reading "Just2Seconds" by Gavin de Becker, Jeff Marquart and Tom Taylor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading!!!, July 25, 2008
This review is from: Just 2 Seconds (Paperback)
One of my earliest childhood memories was the assassination of JFK. As a veteran, and student of history, I was intrigued by the title and having read DeBecker's "Gift of Fear" couldn't wait to read his insights on this fascinating subject. "Just 2 Seconds" did not disappoint. Within a few sentences I found myself hooked. This book provides numerous insights on public figure attacks. It should be considered a must-read for anyone tasked with providing protection for another person, from the US Secret Service and the military to police officers and Hollywood bodyguards.

I've recommended this book to many friends and each has agreed with my assessment. Gavin and his team of experts are the go-to guys in the field of executive protection. The compendium of more than 400 pages of summarized attacks, attempted assassinations and other global incidents from the past 50 years provides a wonderful reference source.

If you are interested in executive protection, history, or simply want to peak inside the minds of the experts, I cannot recommend the fascinating book enough.
