5.0 out of 5 stars amazing-- this is why I listen to jazz, January 10, 1999

I was lucky enough to see him perform when he was inducted into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame (it's small, but it exsists) Since hearing him I have become a huge jazz fan. quirky, fun lyrics and flawless piano playing-- what else do you need?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Special Talent, August 5, 2003

Bob Dorough has made an art form of the unexpected and the unconventional.

He boasts a style of non-threatening, small combo jazz that is truly unique.

He swings - but in a restrained and simple manner - his songs and lyrics are quirky, observational and intimate. His music is up close and personal but never in your face.

I first found him singing duets on a Blossom Dearie live album years ago. I was immediately drawn to his unusual tonal quality and the casual way he imbued great meaning into the lyrics.

It's a trait he shares with the great jazz singers.

Among the star cuts on this thoroughly enjoyable set is "Tis Autumn" - a catchy little piece you'll swear you've heard somewhere before.

My favourite is the beautiful and rarely recorded "Lazy Afternoon".

The only other version of the this song I've heard is by Morgana King. No, this is not a song for your average crooner.

Bob Dorough is far from being that. FIVE STARS for a very special and totally unexpected talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Soothing, January 13, 1999

Bob Dorough's music is the perfect thing to come home to after a stressful day of work, or a non-stressful day for that matter. His notes swirl into a harmonious sound that relaxes every inch of your body. Lyrically it's excellent and his unique twang adds the right touch. "But for now" is a beautiful love song that my girlfriend and I can't help but dance to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful piano jazz, melancholy cool., December 21, 1998

Dorough is piano jazz's best kept secret. From first to last, these tracks will get you humming. "Baltimore Oriole"--a favorite of Miles Davis--is worth the CD all by itself. Dorough tells simple human stories with some lovely piano embellishments. You'll enjoy this CD from the man who brought young people "Schoolhouse Rock." He's a treasure.

Bob's rendition of the title cut of this album is bursting with joy - and the song itself is sheer perfection! Mr. Dorough is one-of-a-kind as a performer and songwriter, and this CD is a "terrific affair"!

I heard one of his songs on the radio and knew I needed more.

Fun, insightful and unique you will find yourself singing along with him. I would say that he is something new but he has been recording for a long time so I think he is just getting the attention he deserves.

Try one of his CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mort Fega introduced me - - -, February 21, 2008

- - to Bob Dorough's work when we were both jazz DJs in Phoenix on KXIV in the early 70's. By the way, we had better numbers on our low powered AM station than the Stereo-FM/NPR affiliate. As I recall, Mort produced the album, and I loved it from the first. His piano's okay, the guitarist gets over-his-head a time or two, but the whole album (as the aforementioned reviews illustrate) was a joy! One of my ex-wives had the vinyl copy, so I'm now rewarding myself with the CD, thank you.
And, yes, Bob was doing those Saturday Morning Cartoons some years ago...
