Wooten & Bailey take you to the "Extreme",

This review is from: Just Add Water (Audio CD)
This release took me pleasantly by surprise. Having recently purchased "Jing Chi" the release off the Tone Center Records label featuring the trio of the great Robben Ford, Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Haslip and liking it I decided to give this disc a spin. All I can say is this cd is outstanding. The bass playing of Victor Wooten, of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and solo fame, and Steve Bailey is truly amazing. These guys are definitely masters of their instruments. Joined by Dennis Chambers on drums, these duo bass players put out an unbelievably melodic bass sound. They're accompanied by some of the most accomplished bass players in the music industry today. Oteil Burbridge, Anthony Jackson, John Patitucci,Billy Sheehan and even drummer Chambers, all make guest appearances on this new disc. Not a bad lineup. This disc is full of jazzy grooves, funked out tones and just great bass playing. All 13 tracks are just amazing. The duo also covers the late bass great Jaco Pastorius'"Portrait of Tracy". One of the standout tracks on this exceptional disc. So all you fans out there of Stuart Hamm, Geddy Lee, Pastorius, Stanley Clarke and other bass greats go out and get this disc and discover a couple more great bass players; Wooten and Bailey!

My wife gave me this as a Christmas present along with a new Discman. The interplay between Victor and Steve is nothing short of a marriage of style and sound from two masters. What really takes this over the edge is the inclusion of other great bassist such as Oteil Burbridge, Billy Sheehan, Anthony Jackson and Prof. John Patitucci. This album is not just another slap fest or "lets see who can rip the fastest lines" but is quite melodic even with some of the complex timing. Dennis Chambers as usual rules on drums but isn't overpowering. I highly recommend this to all musicians who have the privilege of carrying the bottom and causing the groove to flow. It amazes me to think just what Victor will sound like ten years from now as he continues to progress and experiment. The Bass will never be the same thanks to music like this.

Very fun record to listen to. If you like a fretless bass on a record that you rewind parts just to figure out how the hell he is doing it, you need this cd. Dont bother getting the earlier Bass Extremes cd as it is more amazing to WATCH. Yes there is an instructional dvd including all or most tracks on it. Oh wait did I neglect to mention Victor? Ever heard his playing before? Okay, then you know you will be getting some playing that will make you give up on actually playing bass yourself because you know you will never be THAT good. There are also guest appearances by other players, notably Billy Sheehan. Pearl Drums are beaten by the always great Dennis Chambers as well. If youre reading this, just buy the damn cd...it is necessary for survival

Bailey and Wooten return with another offering to the Bass Guitar world. If you have not gotten this album, Cookbook, or the DVD, you need to bundle them together and One-Click now. this will always be a great choice for those who look to the Bass guitar to be something other than a backing instrument.
This is another awesome album for Bass Players. Steve and Victor compose and Perform with experience and expertise and they pull it all together in a CD format. Even when you add in the guest performers, you still get more Bass then you pay for. In a great way. They way that they are able to flip between Bass, Rhythm, and Lead while jamming on these tracks and it is done live in the studio without overdubs. In Jazz, instrumentalists tend to trade licks, and these two master musicians switch with two variant styles that blend together well. Victor with his (mainly) Tenor Bass of A-D-G-C; though he does use a standard tuned bass; makes for a great accompanist and lead player while Steve has the Fretless 6-string for chords, harmonics like crazy, and again killer leads. Both of these guys do great backing up the other and their guests and never step on each others toes during their leads. Steve has a great background in rock with Victors funk and Bluegrass background, so a variety of sounds and styles makes for a wonderful blend of instrumentalists. 100% must buy this album. |
