Great Movie, DVD quality so-so,
This review is from: Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. (DVD)
Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. is one of those early 90's movies that was easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. This movie really is a gem and director Leslie Harris worked really hard to bring her movie to the public. The film is a fictional account of a young woman named Chantal who lives in the projects who strives to graduate from high school early to become a doctor--and most of all to escape the projects. Chantal is street smart and sweet, but she gets sidetracked when she gets pregnant. This is a good movie to show in an educational setting but the language is a bit much at times. My biggest complaints are with the Artesian DVD release. It would have been nice to get some kind of commentary from the director. On top of that the chapter breaks are huge, meaning one chapter to the next includes several scenes. Another complaint is that the original film was small budget so the lightning is poor in some scenes, for instance in the scene where Chantal is in the park with Nattette and Lavonica you can barely see Natette's face. It's obvious there was no restoration to the film, it's just kind of there. I am glad this film made it to DVD. It is one of the films we show the girls in my junior sorority during our teen pregnancy prevention program.

Something to think about,

This movie really made you open your eyes and think about the consequences of sex. I saw it 10 years ago when I was sixteen and the movie really made me think twice about having sex. I just wish someone would make a movie like that in 2004 about HIV/AIDS since people in the African-American community don't believe it can happen to them.

THIS MOVIE CAME OUT WHEN I WAS 13, AND BY ME BEING A AFRICAN AMERICAN YOUNG LADY AT THE TIME, IT REALLY TURNED MY LIFE AROUND. I ESPECIALLY LIKED THE SOUNDTRACK WHICH I CAN'T GET MY HANDS ON ANYWHERE, BUT ITS ALL GOOD. I WOULD RECCOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO ANY YOUNG SISTA OR AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENT WHOSE DAUGHTER (OR SON) HAS GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL, IT WILL DEFINATELY OPEN THEIR EYES, IT OPENED MINE BECAUSE MY MOTHER MADE ME WATCH IT.

Special thanks to Leslie Harris for directing such a moving and thoughtful portrayal of a bright, beautiful, young African-American woman with plenty of spirit and courage. Chantal's character proves that you can make it in this world on your own terms, even if you make a mistake, if you are determined. You might just have to be prepared modify your plans though, but that's not synonymous with giving up! This movie reminds me of my own experiences growing up in inner city NYC as well as how important it is for parents to be available and supportive to their children. Buy this movie and watch it with your children or better yet, watch it BEFORE you have your children.Just ignore Leonard Maltin's review of this movie. It's unfortunate that the only thing he could focus on were the minor roles played by a few white actors even though their roles accurately portrayed the limited and often contemptuous interactions whites frequently have with inner-city youth. To allude that the director is racist for portraying such interactions is both inaccurate and offensive. It's so much easier to toss charged words around than to acknowledge someone else's truth.

I first saw this movie 10 years ago, I was happy to see it made it to dvd. This a great movie to watch with your teenagers. To bad there aren't more movies like this one. Chantel was a typical teenager who had alot of dreams to become a doctor but she got pregnant. This movie really sends a message to parents with young daughter Chantel's age. We really need to talk to our children, instead of young girls doing what Chantel did they can go to there parents to talk about it.

This movies mad me mad, cry and scared the hell out of me.,

This movie made me mad because she had even let the thought of throwing away her baby. It was very realistic though. She had her whole life figured out and she just let her mind drift to other things. A part about the movie that was also very true was the way she broke up with her first boyfriend for the other guy basically just because he had more money. Every male and female needs to watch this movie and understand that you can't just start taking a pill, and after only a couple of days think that you can't get pregnant. And ladies if your man is pressuring you about having sex with him without putting on a condom, then you don't need to be with him. This movie made me cry when I thought the baby was going to be thrown out. What was also sad was the young girls lack of education about sex, and the responsibilities of being a pregnant teen. Ladies its our body and we have to know what's going on with it and take care of it.

Kind of movie that makes you think,

This movie is real, because I know so many smart young women who make the mistake of getting pregnant and then trying to figure out what to do. The choices this young lady made were heart wrentching. It pretty much shows how one misguided choice can affect the rest of your life. I think if you are a parent, you should watch this movie with your teenager, and have a serious talk about SEX....not the birds and the bees but SEX.

Addictive!!!,

I first saw this movie in 1994. A friend's mother got it for him to watch. I was 19 years old. I am now 28 years old and can't seem to not watch this movie. I have the vhs tape and now the dvd. It gives a very provocative and true to life view of life of teen girls. It shows the consequences of unsafe sex and it also shows that teens aren't emotionally mature enough to engage in sexual relationships. I think it's great and when my two daughters, 6 months and 6 years old, are of age I'll definitely sit and watch and discuss with them. We need more realistic movies like this today.

A Great Movie About Reality.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. (DVD)
If I could I would give this movie ten stars instead of five. I love this movie so much because it is so very realistic. I was in my freshman year of high school when I first saw the preview but I really didn't pay much attention to it. But years later when I began to watch it and got into it, the more I understood it and the more I loved it. I have also recently ordered the DVD. Every young teenage girl should see this movie and they could maybe learn something from it. My mother also told me that she heard that there are some pregnant teen girls out there that really do try to hide their pregnancy. I also noticed that the movie was obviously made back in the early 1990s and it reminds me of my early teen years back then. Not that I've gotten pregnant or anything. I would say that I was pretty much the opposite from the character Chantel.

Real life real times,

This movie showed us life as it really is in the urban areas of the USA. This young lady had brains and beauty , with a mouth out of this world. This movie shows us that no matter how smart we are, we are still vulnerable in this world. I will purchase this movie, my children and nephews and nieces need to see how fast your life can change. And how quick stupid decisions can be made.
