About the Author

Tom Sult is a medical doctor, medical educator, author, and inspirational speaker. Despite all of this education, Tom’s early schooling did not go smoothly. By third grade, he was held back and diagnosed with “minimal brain dysfunction,” now known as dyslexia. By the end of his second year of third grade, he had been bullied and teased and in school fights nearly every day. It wasn’t until the following year that, thanks to a mentor, Tom started understanding that a learning disability (something he now sees as a learning advantage) didn’t mean he was stupid. In high school, another important mentor introduced Tom to the wilderness. He began rock-, snow-, and ice climbing, mountaineering, white water rafting, kayaking, and sailing, and eventually became a guide, calling the mountains his cathedral. Later, Tom supplemented his guiding income with a seven-year stint as a paramedic in emergency rooms and ambulances. After being rejected from over forty U.S. medical schools (because his grades, due to dyslexia, didn’t reflect his knowledge), Tom spent a year in acupuncture school and was then accepted at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, WI. There, he not only attended medical school but also followed and learned from local healers of the “bush doctor” shaman tradition. This experience fit closely with the Eastern traditions he was exposed to in acupuncture school. After two years in Grenada, Tom transferred to medical school at UCLA, where he was invited to the home of Norman Cousins, a writer and the head of the psychoneuroimmunology department. Over the next two years, Tom spent as much time as possible at the office of psychoneuroimmunology, as he saw it as the scientific embodiment of the Eastern and shamanistic traditions he had experienced in acupuncture school and in Grenada. The word doctor means teacher. To Tom, that is the most important definition of what a physician should be. Tom was recognized as the Resident Teacher of the Year as a resident in family medicine and is board-certified in family medicine and integrative holistic medicine. He is on faculty with the Institute for Functional Medicine, where he has taught hundreds of medical professionals of all disciplines the art of functional medicine. Tom is a contributing author to The Textbook of Functional Medicine and other publications and maintains a private practice in Willmar, MN. Just Be Well is his first book about functional medicine for the non-medical public.

As an experienced nurse it is refreshing to read this book and know that there are some doctors that really see and know their patients. Just Be Well will have you reflecting on your own past and present health, no one wants textbook treatment anymore with their doctor having all eyes on a laptop, they want real answers by real doctors who go home to their own real families at night. This book shows you how to make positive changes now to prevent suffering the consequences now or even years later. Good health is too precious, you won't settle being labeled idiopathic anything! Dr. Sult could put the word idiopathic on the endangered word list. The real life patient stories are so interesting, I fought back tears when I read of Aaron and his families struggles with autism. Heartfelt Dr. Sult.

Anyone who suffers from chronic illnesses should read this book! Like me, you will feel that this book was written specifically for you. I've had IBS & asthma since I was a child. I have struggled with my weight since the birth of my first child. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 39, type 2 diabetes at 50, contracted Lyme Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and so on.... and on... and on. I am 65 years old now and had accepted that this was just the way it was for me. However, when I read this book I felt the first glimmer of hope that I've had in many a year. After 1 month of following Dr. Sult's recommendations, I am already noticing some improvements - while my RA hasn't completely disappeared, I can now make a fist - which I couldn't before. My blood sugars are lower by about 10 points and I haven't had a bout of IBS since I started following his recommendations. I still have a long way to go, but I'm hopeful about the future. That's one of the best things about Dr. Sult's book - he's not promising any miracle cures - he's not promising any over night cures - he offers a realistic picture of how we got to where we are and how to start making our way back to good health. And... it's written in a very entertaining way - I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his patient case histories and Dr. Sult's own path to functional medicine.

This book embodies all of the essential qualities of Dr. Tom Sult.
The style is inquisitive, boldly honest, and full of intelligence,
heart, and humor. His use of story and metaphor breathe life into concepts that are
otherwise difficult to explain, and the chapters at times read like a
detective novel; you can't wait to see what he will discover next!
His examples of patients experiencing common problems for which he
identifies uncommonly recognized causes bring hope to anyone with
chronic medical conditions. After reading this book, you will want to
find yourself a functional medicine doctor and participate in the
movement to make medicine more personalized and patient focused. It's
a grateful tribute to those who have inspired him, and you, too, will
be inspired by his words. If you can't have him as your doctor, at
least you will have benefit of his wisdom and experience in this
fascinating exploration of functional medicine.

If you ever wondered what it takes to be well here is the book that explains - in a very enjoyable way - a most wholesome path to increase the wellness in your life. Dr. Sult is a most humorous and wholesome Physician that deeply understands a very complex topic (the Systems Biology approach of Functional Medicine). As a result of his clarity he is able to explain what Functional Medicine IS and how it is practiced with simplicity while avoiding the trap of being overly simplistic. He understands that if we are going to improve our outcomes with complex chronic and degenerative disease we will need to change more than how health care is paid for - we will have to change the very medicine we do. I will be recommending this book to my patients and colleagues alike. Thank you Dr. Sult, because by writing this you have enabled many to "Just Be Well".

This book was so much fun to read! It reminded me of the pleasure I experienced when reading Rachel Remen's Kitchen Table Wisdom. Not only did I learn a tremendous amount, but like reading a novel, I enjoyed the experience of story. Tom Sult is a master story-teller.

Dr. Sult's book shows us why the medical profession must switch from concern about WHAT a patient has (the diagnosis) to WHY do they have it. In acute illness and injury, the diagnosis and appropriate protocol for treatment is important. In chronic illness, Dr. Sult helps us understand why it is time to say goodbye to the diagnosis. Instead, we must begin to figure out WHY the person has this problem at this time and how it relates to other problems she or he has. What is the underlying biochemistry? What is this person's past and present environment? What are the stressors and mindset for this person?

This book is the best explanation of Functional Medicine that I have ever read, and if we hope to reverse the upward trend of chronic disease in America, this book has the answers. I highly recommend it.
