I loved this book! I have Dee's other 2 books, but this is the one I have enjoyed the most (though I also liked the others). 2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I had read several reviews which prompted me to purchase the book. This is the first book in years that I have actually thrown away prior to finishing it.

Why do you ask? The characters are not fully developed and I certainly did feel Chloe and Matthew had chemistry. Chloe was clingy and spineless.

I loved this book! I have Dee's other 2 books, but this is the one I have enjoyed the most (though I also liked the others). It is exciting, fast-paced with all kinds of plot twists that left me guessing until the end. I really enjoyed the setting of Vienna. It's such an unusal choice, but it doesn't overwhelm the story. The heroine, Chloe, is spunky and charming, with just enough faults to make her believable and real. Who wouldn't love a messy, accident-prone heroine who ends up in the lap of a dead man?!! The hero, Matthew, is wonderful as well. He is sensitive, but not wimpy. Strong, but not overbearing. Down to earth, but still glamorous (and very sexy). I reccomend this book to anyone who loves a romantic, suspensful, quirky romance novel. It is fresh and fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath taking -- Very highly recommended, July 4, 2001
This review is from: Just Breathe (Mass Market Paperback)
Fifteen years ago a beautiful young reporter died mysteriously when she went to the Volksgarten in Vienna, Austria to meet a source. If her source told the truth, then she could have been on the path to a very promising career. Instead, in the moment she lay dying, she recognized the executioner as a friend.

In the present day, Chloe Nichols seems to draw trouble. Part of a very exclusive tour, Chloe is hoping the magazine she works for will buy her story and reimburse her expenses. She intends to write about how the jet set travels, but the tour hasn't gone as planned. First it was the cow and then it was an altercation in the hotel room. But her most remarkable disaster occurs when she trips over a dead body as she disembarks a train. Fortunately, a handsome, incredibly sexy stranger immediately comes to Chole's aid, and helps her to avoid the police's uncomfortable questions.

Matthew can't resist the marvelous woman who combines innocence with a backbone. His startling kiss, begun to make the police not notice them, turns into an encounter that defies all reason and logic. What began as a measure to be certain there would be no repercussions for what Chloe had or hadn't seen, became something entirely more. He hadn't been able to save Lisa fifteen years ago. This time he won't let anything happen to Chloe.

Sabra Hitchcock shot Charles Messer as he disembarked the train, cursing the klutzy woman who managed to get rescued by the man she wants, has always wanted. Matthew is both her nemesis and her obsession. An ex CIA agent turned mercenary, Sabra's a dangerous woman to cross. And whether she knows it or not, Chloe's interest in Matthew places her directly in the line of fire.

Dee Davis' marvelous voice combines irreverence, romance, and amusement to create a memorable read. Indeed, Davis strings words together with the grace worthy of a poet, displaying her remarkable mastery of language with every page. Further, plot twists and teasers keep the reader not only wondering at character's motives, but also involved with the humorous subplot -- the bit with the cow and naked man kept me in stitches! The eccentric and realistic main characters keep the reader amused even as the danger builds. Equally remarkable are the wonderful secondary characters, each carefully crafted. Most memorable are the "muses" who can be my travelling companions anytime, except Irma needs to leave her gun at home. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I inhaled this one!, March 11, 2002
This review is from: Just Breathe (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a great book. Ex-CIA agent Matthew Broussard is at the right place at the right time for ditzy Chloe Nichols. In an Austrian train station a sniper kills a man in front of Chloe and she is knocked over and falls right on top of the dead man. Matt is there and wisks her away to safety or so he thinks.

Chloe is a travel writer experiencing a European Tour with a group of retired ladies and one befuddled tour guide. Already having experienced several well, "incidents" not much could happen that would surprise her until the dead man in the train station and unbelievable hunk that kisses her senseless in order to make her blend in with the crowd. Chloe's trip ends up dumping her into the middle of an international problem with CIA and Russians, and several unsolved murders which are tied to Matthew and his past. With the help of her elderly travel companions, and her strong and yummy "fiancee" (Matthew you really need to read the book) murders are solved and friendships are cemented. You won't guess who the bad guy is until the very end.

You really need to read the book. You will laugh and fall in love. Just like love should be.

Why do you ask? The characters are not fully developed and I certainly did feel Chloe and Matthew had chemistry. Chloe was clingy and spineless.

Matthew didn't seem to have any ability to focus, instead he was constantly worried about Chloe.

The elderly companions were a copy of the Golden Girls.

Perhaps I should make another Dee Davis selection.

2.0 out of 5 stars sorry, don't get the attraction, November 5, 2004

I bought this book after the glowing reviews here but have to say I'm seriously disappointed. I didn't feel like the characters jumped out of the pages, the heroine was irritating- the author was going for funny and quirky and it never really worked. And the romantic scenes were just plain boring with absolutely no heat. When an author needs to use lines like `riding the stars together' they should just stick to suspense. If you want a story with a good amount of humor, vivid characters and some passion read something by Susan Donovan or Charlaine Harris.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dee Davis has a winner!, July 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Breathe (Mass Market Paperback)
Just Breathe is one of the best romantic suspense books I've read this year. Matthew Broussard and Chloe Nichols are such likeable characters, and the Muses (the old ladies) are great fun and add much enjoyment to this entertaining book. Add a wonderfully intriguing plot, the setting of Vienna, and you have one heck of a good adventure. I highly recommend this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Boring..., August 8, 2004
This review is from: Just Breathe (Mass Market Paperback)
I've read Dancing In The Dark & After Twilight by Dee Davis & Just Breathe doesn't even come close to the other 2. I found the book to be pretty boring & I didn't totally follow the whole conspiracy thing. I got the main idea of the conspiracy but it was basically laid all out for you therefore there wasn't much of a mystery. I'm finding that Dee likes using the same expressions over in over, not just in 1 book but from book to book. Examples would be "Let me love you" & "the smile didn't quite reach his eyes". Also, I'm left still wondering about the cow story. Was it ever really explained? I love Dee Davis books but Just Breathe is one that I can't recommend.

I read the book because I had recently been to Vienna. It had an interesting plot, some good humor, but she took the low road on the romance storyline. With a little more effort she could have written a much better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dee Davis has done it again!, July 30, 2001
This review is from: Just Breathe (Mass Market Paperback)
Dee Davis has done it again with a great novel. "After Twilight" was a great novel as well and this is another reflection of her talent. This book is full of suspense, mystery, murder mystery, and romance. Although she isn't my favorite author, so far, I would have to say that she is my second favorite. Those of you who buy this book, which I hope you do, will find it incredibly boring in some places, but I give it a five star rating because of its suspense and just the right amount of romance for my taste. Don't miss this book if you're a mystery and thrillers lover just like me, and you like a little bit of romance to spice up your read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Romantic Suspense, July 8, 2001

Chloe Nichols is acting as a travel guide to a group of elderly ladies journeying across Europe when she literally stumbles over a man while exiting a train in Austria. Though quickly whisked away by Matthew Broussard, ex-CIA agent, Chloe soon discovers that the man she landed upon in Austria is dead, and Matthew believes that she may be in danger. So he decides to pretend to be her fiancée in order to best protect her.

Chloe can't imagine that she would be in peril, as she didn't see anything when the man was shot. But Matthew believes otherwise as troubling events involving Chloe occur with increasing frequency. As danger propels them together, fiction approaches reality, and Chloe and Matthew realize that their attraction isn't only for public consumption.

Chloe is a delightful heroine, not your perfect femme fatale, but a very down to earth type of girl finding herself involved in some extraordinary events. And Matthew is a terrific hero, handsome and strong, but also with a sensitive side.

The twists and turns of the plot are so well executed that it is difficult to see what is coming next. The reader can never be sure until the last page is finished, who is friend and who is foe. For a wonderful read with non-stop excitement, Ms. Davis has penned a sure winner.
