4.0 out of 5 stars Darkly amusing
This was an entertaining flick. In short, a son finds himself having inherited his estranged father's quickly-approaching-bankruptcy funeral home, its offbeat staff, and newly discovered source of "demand". 3.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Dark
I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie but it was very good and the death scenes just kept getting more and more violent and creative

4.0 out of 5 stars Darkly amusing, January 11, 2010

This was an entertaining flick. In short, a son finds himself having inherited his estranged father's quickly-approaching-bankruptcy funeral home, its offbeat staff, and newly discovered source of "demand". Its very effectively told through understatement throughout that gradually builds into more and more assertive characters. For example, the inheriting son is exceptionally socially awkward, and comes to find himself romantically engaged with another socially awkward character, and that evolution is actually somewhat heartfelt. It turns all the more interesting as that couple creates demand for the funeral home, if you get the not-so-subtle attempt at revealing a spoiler. The character development was highly entertaining and actually well done for a low-ish budget flick. The story is entertaining as well; the son finds himself in a bad situation, and then in another bad situation trying to solve the first one, and so on. Its an amusing comedy of errors that actually makes sense and has some well thought out plot elements. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Letterbox is not Widescreen, February 24, 2011

This isn't so much a review of the film as a comment on the DVD presentation. The product description is `widescreen' with an aspect ratio of 1.66: 1. The film is actually presented in letterbox format so as to accommodate the picture within a 4:3 standard vision television set. Widescreen it is not.

The back cover of the DVD slick also states that the DVD's regional code is `ALL'. This is not the case. Amazon's description that this is a Region One DVD is correct.

Prospective buyers of DVD's deserve better than this from distributors. I don't blame Amazon; they can hardly be expected to view every DVD to ascertain that the technical information is as claimed by the distributor. We all rely on the integrity of those selling their products via Amazon. In this case we have been let down.

great acting, and a very terrific and underrated score, this film has all the making that a true sleeper movie needs.

most have never heard of this gem, but it is terrific, with a wickedly delicious twist to top off one hell of a fun movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buried humor, March 16, 2009
This review is from: Just Buried (DVD)
The talented, lovely Rose Byrne's perfect American accent can be heard in his lackluster dark comedy with a flock of fine Canadian actors. The story is as moody as the Nova Scotia weather and, at times, even more gruesome. Sad to say, I never got caught up in the humor. But it's not awful -- and few things are as vitalizing as gazing at Rose.
