4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this if you're a true child of the 80's
There are some songs on this disk which, if you're like me, you'll have about a thousand copies of. "Come On Eileen" comes to mind as a oft-repeated compilation staple. And some of the tracks are just weird selections, like "Kath." But Heaven 17's neo-industrial "Fascist Groove Thang," and OXO's ultra-danceable "Whirly Girl"...

3.0 out of 5 stars I think the Tubes would be embarrassed to be included here
I doubt the Tubes would want their song "She's a Beauty" lumped together in this package of songs. But you gotta love having access to a copy of OXO's "Whirly Girl". Geez, I can remember buying that album when it was first released in the early 80's! Great song!

There are some songs on this disk which, if you're like me, you'll have about a thousand copies of. "Come On Eileen" comes to mind as a oft-repeated compilation staple. And some of the tracks are just weird selections, like "Kath." But Heaven 17's neo-industrial "Fascist Groove Thang," and OXO's ultra-danceable "Whirly Girl" rate high on the "Oh yeah, I remember that" scale, where other compilations are satisfied to pump out one "Big 80's" groaner (like Toni Basil's contemptible but ubitquitous "Mickey") after another. Particularly commendable is Rhino's inclusion of Missing Persons' "Walkin' in L.A.," a solid reminder that you could be new wave and still rock. Provocatively-clad Missing Persons' lead singer Dale Bozzio's oddball delivery layered over a sharp guitar riff and a pounding drum beat (not even a machine, even!) make this a high-decibel driving song. Also notable in pleasant obscurity: Mental as Anything's cheerfully mournful "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?" Rhino's liner notes are, as always, fabulous. A very good CD overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Escalator of Life" by Robert Hazard, April 2, 1999

This review is from: Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s, Vol. 8 (Audio CD)
This compilation CD includes Robert Hazard's obscure, but classic, song "Escalator of Life". That alone makes this great collection of new wave songs worth owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the most of the others, September 9, 1998

I have five of the "Just can't get enough" CDs, and this particular collection is one of the best in the series. Some of the other CDs have some tracks which can only be described as horrible, but the songs on this one are consistently decent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Rhino Records, July 22, 2011

This review is from: Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s, Vol. 8 (Audio CD)
Popular music was reinvigorated in the first half of the 1980s by New Wave music. In the Nineties, Rhino Records culled New Wave and released 15 CDs worth of some of the genre's most noteworthy offerings in the "Just Can't Get Enough" series.

While volumes 4, 5, 9, 10, and 11 of the series are all very strong, this volume, the eighth, might (just barely) be the strongest in the series. This disc contains some of the all-time classics of the genre, such as "Come on Eileen" and "Mexican Radio." There are six U.S. Top 40 hits here, some other songs that became widely known via MTV, and a few obscurites. And as always, Rhino does a very good job with the liner notes.

The songs on the disc are mostly from the peak of New Wave, the spring and summer of 1983. This disc and others in the "Just Can't Get Enough" series are an excellent chronicle of one of the best genres of popular music of the rock era.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where is the rest of the OXO album?, January 26, 2004
This review is from: Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s, Vol. 8 (Audio CD)
Amazing no one ever make any attempt to release the original OXO album. The whole LP was full of great pop songs which made dance a generation in the early 80s in Mar del Plata, Argentina Every DJ in town had a copy of the album. Despite their hit "Whirly Girl", "You make it sound so easy" and "I'll take you back" were on top. Please Rhino help us out!!!!!
