A NEW HERO FOR A NEW ERA

Mustang Sally has some speedy shoes to fill. This young superhero has waited her whole life to join Just Cause – the premiere team of American heroes. Now she’s hoping her super-speed will earn a spot on the same team to which her parents and grandparents belonged.

AN OLD GRUDGE FROM AN OLD ENEMY

A chance encounter with the villain who killed her father changes everything. Even though she’s only an intern, Sally devotes herself to finding the man known as Destroyer. With the help of her eagle-winged best friend Sondra and her super-strong love interest Jason, her investigations uncover a sinister plot stretching all the way back to her grandparents’ era. Sally and Just Cause must risk everything to halt Destroyer’s plans and save the entire world.

About the Author

Ian Thomas Healy is a prolific writer who dabbles in many different speculative genres. He's an eight-time participant and winner of National Novel Writing Month where he's tackled such diverse subjects as sentient alien farts, competitive forklift racing, a religion-powered rabbit-themed superhero, cyberpunk mercenaries, cowboy elves, and an unlikely combination of vampires with minor league hockey. He is also the creator of the Writing Better Action Through Cinematic Techniques workshop, which helps writers to improve their action scenes. When not writing, which is rare, he enjoys watching hockey, reading comic books (and serious books, too), and living in the great state of Colorado, which he shares with his wife, children, house-pets, and approximately five million other people. 5.0 out of 5 stars Superhero Action May 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had a hard time putting this one down. I love superheroes and Just Cause is an action packed superhero adventure. Mr. Healy has done a great job creating a world that is coherent and has history to it. I wouldn't exactly call the world realistic because there are people with superpowers like force fields and magic guitars (we're talking superheroes here), but it is engaging. It never feels campy. There are over the top superpowers and superhero action, but your care about the story and the characters.

Mr. Healy clearly loves superhero fiction. He has taken tried and true superhero tropes, made them his own, and crafted an excellent world, story, and characters. I highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story well told April 18, 2012
By Mvargus
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I appear to be on a streak where I read a lot of superhero tales. Ian Healy's Just Cause was the latest, and while I don't feel its the best, it definitely stands up well to comparison with hte many other offerings out there.

Ian writers with a smooth style that makes for easy reading. He doesn't use a lot of description, but there is enough that you can build a picture of what's occuring and where.

The characters are good, if a bit flat. The main character Salena Thompson is well developed and described, but others seemed to be mostly a power and maybe a physical description. Deep descriptions of personalities or even showing Salena's interactions with any but the most important characters was uncommmon.

but there is a great foundation built here for future stories, so perhaps Ian will give us deeper glimpses at characters as the story continues.

I did see two issues.

The first was the final climatic fight. For all of the build-up to it, the descriptions here were paper thin, and in fact the end of hte fight was so abrupt as to ignore some of the concerns the characters had entering the fight. It was like Ian decided "I need to bring this to an end. All fighting stops."

the aftermath was similarly skipped on.

The second was the villain. He's described as an evil mastermind, but its almost at the point where I consider him completely over-the-top. This is probably one of my biggest concerns with any superhero story. There is a point where the pwoer levels just become so ridicilous that the story loses almost all of its punch. For me the villain here is right at that limit, and I found the conflict less compelling than in other stories where the balance of power was not as skewed.

Lovers of superhero novels will enjoy this. And I do hope that Ian keeps writing. He's created an intersting world and characters, if he can avoid losing the story to ever increasing power levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Thrill-A-Minute Read March 14, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Mustang Sally is my kind of hero! She may be young and inexperienced, but she's willing to try, even if it means failure.

Ian Healy has created an entertaining, yet believable, Superhero World complete with mega-villains and plenty of parahumans to fight them. His action scenes are intense and well written. His dialogue is quick with plenty of witticism added in for humor. The characters have human emotions with mundane problems like the rest of us, but their super powers and practically impossible situations make for a good read.

Overall, this is fun, action-packed, and very enjoyable. I liked Just Cause and can't wait for the next installment of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed Hero Adventure January 6, 2012
Format:Paperback
Just Cause starts out with a bang, as the Lucky Seven, along with 18-year-old main character, Salena Thompson, better known as Mustang Sally, are summoned by the police commissioner to stop a giant robot from destroying the Science and Technology Expo.

The Lucky Seven are decimated in the fight and Sally discovers the man inside the robot is Destroyer, the villain who killed her dad before she was born. She sets out on a mission of revenge with the help of her new team, Just Cause, to destroy the man behind the machine. However he has tricks of his own up his sleeve including partnering with a Hitler like villain by the name of Kaiser.

Though he's introduced many characters early on, Ian describes them in great detail, each standing out by their unique abilities and costumes, making it easy to keep track of who's who.

Mustang Sally is especially well drawn. She's a tiny blonde thing, who wears a red and yellow costume, and probably the fastest parahuman on the face of the planet. She comes from a long line of speedsters on her mom's side and is destined to follow in their footsteps.

Though she's confident in her abilities as a speedster, when it comes to love she's apprehensive. She'd concentrated so hard on her training, she never took the time to date. Then she meets, Jason, a Brick, better known as Mastiff, a boy two years older than she--huge, muscly, and incredibly hot.

Ian writes their relationship well, both are timid and bashful at first, but we get to watch their relationship bloom into a full on love story. It's very sweet with a side of spice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Superhero Story July 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just Cause is a well written, action packed superhero story. I liked that it was set in a world that was familiar but just different enough from our own to give it a unique flavor. The characters are well drawn and the story flows very well.

Where it varies the most from other urban fantasy and superhero stories that I've read is that special powers don't necessarily equate to invulnerability. The characters can get hurt or die. Some are just regular people with certain gifts, and I enjoyed that. Sure, they heal more quickly than most of us, but it adds something just knowing that there's an element of risk involved with every confrontation.

Highly recommended and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Decent, but not fantastic. The story is solid and the plotting is good. I can't say what specifically would need to be improved to get it rated higher.
