Can you say "goosebumps"?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Just for a Day (Audio CD)
You know when you hear a song for the first time and it is so good it gives you chills? This whole album is like that. And it's not just the first time you get this reaction. I have listened to it over a million times (give or take a few hundred) and it still has the same effect. This album is pure heaven . . .

Slowdive are the Greatest Band Ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Just for a Day (Audio CD)
Slowdive are truly brilliant. No band has ever accomplished so much with guitars and words and using them to create dream like entities which many people can then refer to as dreams. Songs like "Catch The Breeze" and "Primal" are simply stunning, but not to take away from the rest of the album, which is equally beautiful. And Rachel Goswell has the most beautiful voice in the history of music. Part of the so called lovely "Shoegazing" movement, which i believe was one of the most imaginative and moving scenes of music ever created.....other bands worth checking out are Adorable, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Catherine Wheel, Blind Mr. Jones, Rollerskate Skinny, Sweet Jesus, Revolver, Moose, and the Telescopes. BRILLIANT!! Slowdive should be listened to by everyone worth being called soulful. Feel free to email me.

I am one of those people for whom music marks memories... and Slowdive, along with Ride, Catherine Wheel, Kitchens of Distinction, My Bloody Valentine, and many other bands of the so-called "shoegazer" genre transport me back to a time in my youth when I gazed at my own shoes until they seemed to bleed together... all the same, it's introspective, gorgeous, and borders on the kind of emotional perfection that still moves me to tears.

The Best of the Best,

This is one of the greatest albums of all time. Each song sounds like the soundtrack to your ascension into the heavens after death. The music simply floats, surges and often weeps with washes of beauty and sensuality. When they were around they were often reviewed with the same sort of distaste once given only to progressive rock. They were also unceremoniously dropped by their crap US record label and forced to self-finance their US tour in '94. Stick with the first two albums for a slab of the best bliss you'll ever hear.

What a great album. There's no question I'm an unabashed Slowdive fan, and that's not to say they haven't released...But this, their debut, really rewards on multiple listens. It's definitely more ambient than "Souvlaki", their sophomore release, but it gels together much better, and just constantly builds in quality as you listen from track to track. By the end, you wish it could go on forever, but alas (like the band itself), nothing lasts orever. Remarkably mature for a debut album, and definitely one of the most underrated British albums of all time.

If we truly sleep to dream, Slowdive shows us the way...,

ETHERAL and SPELL-BINDING -- When listening to Slowdive you are not merely an observer, you become one with the music. Its' dominating "wall of sound" crashes into you like an emotional Tsunami. Lyrics of "Celia's Dream" teeters on the edge of consciousness and slumber whereas "Brighter" empowers a positive and unbeatable state-of-mind. All of the songs on "Just for a Day" are equally powerful and beautiful. Though Slowdive may be no more, their music lives on. Share in the journey, won't you?...

Heaven on Aluminum,
By A Customer
This review is from: Just for a Day (Audio CD)
Just for a Day, the debut album of the now-defunct Slowdive, is the perfect soundtrack for a multitude of sins. It's follow-up, 'Souvlaki', is just as good, but somewhat more experimental. Track standouts: Waves, Ballad of Sister Sue, Celia's Dream.

an afternoon in bliss,

this is simply a beautiful collection of dream pop songs. slowdive's intricacies put them far above other artists of this nearly defunct genre (ride, etc.). "ballad of sister sue" and "celia's dream" are standouts, although every song is a lush meandering masterpiece. this is the definition of the "shoegazer" genre. check out the mojave 3 lp to see what some members did later.
