Book Description

Beeler Large Print Mystery Series May 2001

When the garishly grotesque clan of wealthy carpet-sweeper magnate Otto Broadie sweeps down upon Judith McMonigle's Hillside Manor Inn, it looks like there'll be a wild night of drinking, dining, and fortune-telling in the offing. But when their soothsayer-for-hire Madame Gushenka drops dead after someone douses her tea leaves with bug killer, harried hostess Judith and her irrepressible cousin Renie are left to clean up the mess. One of the Brodie bunch would dearly love to sweep the Madame's murder under the rug, however, and that might mean eliminating the nosy Ms. McMonigle as well. But with the help of her one-time beau, policeman Joe Flynn, Judith is determined to rattle the dust off some closeted family skeletons, in order to coax a killer out of hiding before coffee is served.

About the Author

Mary Richardson Daheim is a Seattle native who started telling stories with pictures because she didn't know how to write.  After acquiring the rudiments in grade school, Daheim penned her first mystery novel at age eleven.  She admits it was terrible, but "showed promise."  Thus encouraged, she went on to graduate from the University of Washington's School of Communications, having acquired the knowledge and skills to support herself until she wrote a better book.

In 1983, Daheim published her first historical romance, Love's Pirate, for Avon Books.  She followed this award-winning novel with Destiny's Pawn, Pride's Captive and Passion's Triumph, all for Avon, as well as several historicals for Harlequin.  An avid mystery reader, Daheim decided to try her hand at murder and mayhem with the creation of the Bed-and-Breakfast series from Avon, beginning with Just Desserts, and followed by Fowl Prey, Holy Terrors, Dune to Death, Bantam of the Opera, A Fit of Tempera and Major Vices.

Daheim is married to David Daheim, an instructor of cinema, literature, and English at Shoreline Community College.  The Daheims have three daughters: Barbara, Katherine, and Magdalen.  Daheim is member of the Authors Guild, Mystery Writers of America and Romance Writers of America. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Murder and mayhem in a B & B, February 11, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This is the first in a series of Bed and Breakfast Mysteries by Mary Daheim. In this book Judith McMonigle, a middle-aged widow, has started a bed and breakfast. Eager to fill up her reservation book, Judith plays hostess to the Brodie family, a collection of eccentric characters whose house is being fumigated. They invite a fortune teller as "entertainment" for their weekend, and when the fortune teller dies, she is found to have many connections with different members of the family. During the murder investigation, Judith becomes reacquainted with an old flame who is now a police investigator. She, of course, deduces the killer before her former boyfriend, action which may not qualify him as a future boyfriend. This is fun, light reading, in the "cozy" genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good light read. Enjoyable., April 3, 2000

Having read all of Tamar Myers books, I decided to give Mary Daheim a try. My husband & I stay in Bed & Breakfasts when we travel, so a mystery in one intrigued me. I wasn't disappointed. It was very good and I didn't guess the killer. I was amazed that the whole story took place in just a couple of days, but as they say, time flies when you're having fun! - solving a mystery that is.

Zany characters, poignant relationships make this a fun interesting read. I can hardly wait to read some more by this author. The end leaves you wanting to know more about what happened to these characters.
