Love this book. Bought it because I love elephants and because Shirley, the main elephant of focus in this book, is my adoptee from the Elephant Sanctuary. It's more than a book for children, it's for anyone who loves elephants and wants to see them treated with respect and compassion. Thanks to Carol Buckley for all her glorious efforts on behalf of elephants. Now, if we could just stop using animals in circuses, life would be great!

Very touching story about 2 elephants, Shirley and Jenny who found each other after many years apart , now at the Elephant Sanctuary in TN. Awesome pictures.

This is feel-good book about the elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN. The pictures are great, the stories are great for elephant-lovers, but I gave it only four stars because the book is pretty short. I bought it for my wife, and she read it in about an hour. Overall, I feel good about the money going to such a good cause.

I loved this book! It shows how intelligent these magnificent creatures are, and, also, how caring and emotional they are. I highly recommend this book for all elephant fans. No matter how old they are. I have read other books by Ms. Buckley on these animals, and have enjoyed them.

Elephants were Never meant to be taken for a side-show or confined to small spaces! Their life is a mirror of ourselves and their remarkable "family behavior" is very touching. How we could learn so much from these beautiful animals is I think the subject here.. Our children are losing the ability to relate to animals of all types.. I would like every child to experience responsibility of owning and caring for a pet and to love it. This is a true love story.. Good job. I give this five stars!

After having read "Tarra & Bella: The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends", I just had to run out and get this book!

I'm not sure the telling of this tale was quite as amazing as "Tarra and Bella" but it's still an incredible true story about elephant Shirley, who comes to the Elephant Sanctuary so that she can live with other elephants.

It's an interesting tale and animal lovers (like myself) will delight in the process of getting Shirley to the Elephant Sanctuary as well as her first day there.

There's a surprising moment about half way through that is so sweet and touching and which sets the rest of the book off and running (I won't divulge it, but I think it shows another amazing thing about elephants and friendship!).

While the photographs are nothing amazing in of themselves, they do help illustrate the story, and are definitely adequate!

Definitely recommended!

A wonderful story of an elephant's true life and how our values as a society are changing regarding their welfare. Excellent for teaching.

Wonderful story of the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. Shows friendship and love between the animals and the people who started the sanctuary.

I absolutely love this book. I may be somewhat predjudiced as I cared for Shirley during the 90's and she is truly a precious elephant who deserves all the happiness her new surroundings have given her. I think its a great read for old and young alike and expresses in a personal way the deep love animals have for each other.

I bought this book for myself and for a couple of other people. It is a great picture book for children and also tells a very heartwarming story.

Shirley was the elephant at the local zoo that I visited as a child and was my favorite animal. I was so sad to see her go, but was amazed at the story that unfolded after she relocated to the sanctuary.

My son loves for me to read this story to him and visits Shirley's plaque at the zoo every time we go to "see the elephant from the book".
