Book Description

A psychologist and leadership expert explains how to harness the right level of anxiety

Most of us see anxiety as a bad thing, so at the first sign of it we try to fight back or run away. But according to Robert Rosen, this outdated view ignores one of the most powerful forces in business: Anxiety helps us concentrate, learn, relate to people, think more creatively, and deliver better results.

Of course, too much anxiety causes fear, chaos, and loss of morale. But too little leads to stagnation and a false sense of security. It’s like a rubber band: If you pull it too hard, it breaks. If you don’t pull it hard enough, you fail to maximize its potential. Finding the happy medium between panic and passivity is the secret to success.

Drawing on twenty years of research with CEOs, Rosen explains how great leaders succeed by living and leading with just enough anxiety. He shows how the ability to manage anxiety brings out their own best performance, enables them to build great teams, and inspires and challenges their organizations.

Only when we allow ourselves to feel our insecurity, discomfort, confusion, and pain can we reach our potential, both as individuals and teams. Just Enough Anxiety offers practical guidance to all kinds of organizations, blending cutting-edge psychology with real-world stories of success.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anxiety is an unfortunate fact of life, but can be a positive force in business success, says psychologist Rosen, contending that today's rapid rate of change is particularly anxiety provoking for businesses and those who work to build them. Rosen believes that business leaders can manage their own anxiety to yield positive company results. Though our minds try to protect us from anxiety by using ego defense mechanisms that can be productive or destructive, either too much or too little anxiety can be a hindrance to performance. But the right amount of anxiety can motivate and encourage. With checklists, questionnaires and self-evaluation forms, Rosen offers tools and guidelines to help readers assess and understand their personal reactions to the emotion. Concrete, real-life examples and explanations of anxiety's various forms, personal effects and potentially positive aspects teach managers how to work with the emotion and elicit its healthy side from employees. Rosen's insights are thought provoking and helpful. (Mar. 13)

From Booklist

Rosen, psychologist and leadership expert, provides a road map for success in living and leading with just enough anxiety. He quotes Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” With interviews of 300 top executives over a 20-year period, Rosen presents his recommendations for leaders in our rapidly changing environment to create just the right level of anxiety to manage themselves, mobilize people, maximize performance, and accelerate sustainable growth. Rosen promotes healthy anxiety, which he defines as the extra effort to accomplish an individual’s personal best, the exact amount you need to respond to danger, tackle a tough problem, or take a leap of faith. We learn that in striving to know themselves, be themselves, and challenge themselves while loving themselves, leaders and individuals can use anxiety as a catalyst for successfully functioning and reaching their potential in our complex and uncertain world. An excellent book. --Mary Whaley

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Reading, April 3, 2008
This review is from: Just Enough Anxiety: The Hidden Driver of Business Success (Hardcover)
In Just Enough Anxiety, Dr. Robert Rosen gave just enough information to shift my perspective on anxiety. There are a glut of books on the market advising readers how to relieve their anxiety, or rid their lives of it. This book stands out because it acknowledges that, in today's world, anxiety is a constant and inescapable companion for all of us. The news isn't as bad as it sounds. Dr. Rosen outlines how each of us can monitor, control and harness the energy of anxiety to become more productive in our own lives and on the job. The book is filled with compelling examples of some of the most successful business leaders who have done this. The good news is that the principles in the book apply to anyone---those at the top of the career ladder or those on their the way up. I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Repetitive, November 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book had a good idea/concept but I gave up reading in the middle of it since the style was very repetitive, the idea never got developed beyond what is in the introduction, and a lot of the examples used were not on point.

5.0 out of 5 stars NEW CONCEPT ON OLD THOUGHT, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Just Enough Anxiety: The Hidden Driver of Business Success (Hardcover)
I think Bob Rosen's book JUST ENOUGH ANXIETY is important enough for
Executives and those on the to way to that goal to read, and understand it will help you run your business and focus properly and successfully in your company.

I wish I had had the luxury, during the years I ran a business, of reading this guide to identify the problems and motivating employees on a consistent basis. Learning to understand the differences in anxiety and learning to focus with more controlled anxiety would have helped me grow the company in more progressive manner.
.
I feel the book has enough skills to help non-executives, seniors, and retirees. Everyone has ideas from past experiences, most think we understand the present, and many have no concept how to embrace and focus on the significant changes the future will bring. If we choose the idea that anxiety, {JEA} will help us on this journey, the future will help us be more effective citizens.
