Rather than mocking or offending, Earles and Jensen use phone calls to build recurring characters and concerns of warmth, depth, and complexity. The recipients are often laughing or intellectually engaged - and Earles and Jensen themselves get so wrapped up in their characters that you sense they've forgotten they're acting. The subjects range from 80s TV shows to tattoo doctoring to the highlights of indie rock. Two CDs for the price of one, with 58 phone calls, 48-page booklet, and original drawings by Devendra Banhart, Adam Green, Jennifer Herrema, Gavin McInnes, Archer Prewitt, Matt Sweeney, and other luminaries.

I actually came about Vol. 1 through a friend. Point is, I didn't seek it out or think much of it the first time I heard it, but damn did it grow on me. I must have listened to the thing about a hundred times. As the description states, it's much more character-oriented than a lot of prank call CDs. It's also much less combative (although Christopher Cross gets a little salty!) than others. On this disc (haven't heard Vol. 2 yet) there are more drawn out, engaging conversations. So, it may sound weird to use the phrase "thinking-man's prank call CD," but that's kind of how I'd describe this.
