Images of a Simpler Time,

This review is from: Just Folks (Hardcover)
I am honored to have the copy of this book that my grandfather received for Christmas in 1923 and am thrilled to see that Edgar Guest's works are once again available.I have long admired the poetry of Edgar Guest for its simplicity. The simple, Victorian charm in his work is illustrated well in poems about everyday occurances such as fishing. His poems cover all aspects of life from holiday celebrations to the loss of a child and each brings a distinct emotion to the printed page. While the language is occaisionally overly syrupy and stilted it amazes me how true is words still are nearly 85 years after they were first published. For poetry fans, Guest is worth reading. |
