5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional solo debut!
You like smooth jazz? You like smart and original melodies? You like buying a CD and being able to enjoy every single track? Mindi Abair's new album "It Just Happens That Way" is perfect for you. Loaded with original and creative songs that are a break from the run-of-the-mill jazz that is prevalent today, this CD is enjoyable from start to finish. I find the CD has a...

3.0 out of 5 stars New Candy Dulfer?
Like Candy Dulfer, Mindy Abair is a very pretty sax player. Because this is only "smooth" jazz, it's a little hard to tell how talented she really is, there are no impressive solos, and much of the CD is background music for a nice dinner. Still, she blows a nice sax sound, and her vocals are sexy. As you can see from the other reviews, the smooth jazz crowd loves this...

I find the CD has a song for me no matter what mood I'm in. If you don't know Mindi she is an attractive young lady who jams on the sax as good as anyone and can also sing in a distinctive way. This is the best CD to come along for smooth jazz fans in a long while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mindi's solo debut is truly amazing!, March 6, 2003

This review is from: It Just Happens That Way (Audio CD)
This is a great CD. Mindi Abair is the newest and best thing to come out of smooth jazz in a long time. I bought this CD on a whim while scouring the music isles and I am very glad I did. Compared to everything else on the racks it looked like it would be different and would introduce something new and refreshing to my tired jazz collection. Did I mention it's a great CD? Mindi is talented, her songs are original and creative. If you like smooth jazz and want to take a chance on a new artist who will soon be a household name get the CD and you'll soon love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mindi Abair: unique and up tempo!, March 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: It Just Happens That Way (Audio CD)
If you haven't heard of Mindi Abair by now, where have u been? Mindi is a young hip Jazz musician who recently launched her debut CD, which is slowly sneaking to the top of the charts. Whether or not you traditionally listen to Jazz or not you'll like this CD. She's got a very unique style that mixes classic jazz with contemporary pop and boy can she blow. Before I listened to her, I never believed I could fall in love with a Jazz CD, one listen to Mindi however and I've been hooked ever since. She's got up tempo stuff, moderate and easy listening. One of the tracks titled, Lucy's, would make a perfect wedding song -something to keep in mind-.

Still, she blows a nice sax sound, and her vocals are sexy. As you can see from the other reviews, the smooth jazz crowd loves this stuff, but if you're more into Coltrane, you're going to want to take a pass. Personally I really like the title cut, and "flirt," but I think the CD would have been better if a standard or two could have been introduced to break up the smooth jazz monotony.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pumpin' Gas, February 2, 2005

I love listening to music in my car. Sometimes I drive somewhere, or go well beyond my destination, just to listen to music alone. Sometimes it's blues, sometimes jazz, sometimes just good old rock n' roll. If I was to make a list of my top 10 'in the car' albums, this would make it. Even to the top 5. Maybe even to #1. Because this album just makes you feel alive.
Play the first songs and get a variety of melodies that are wonderfuly catchy with-out being overtly commercial. Songs that feature her wonderful and unique sound on the sax. Save Tonight, as one of the few vocal features, just blows me away. The combination of her Sheryl Crow type sound with her sax makes me wish I was the one saying good-bye.
There honestly isn't a bad track on the CD. Not a single track that doesn't cause me to leave my sunglasses on when I get out of the car to pump the gas. That doesn't leave me feeling just a little cooler than before I listened. That doesn't fail to remind me, that whatever we're doing, life is not a rehearsal. I just couldn't recommend a CD more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Safe., May 31, 2004
This review is from: It Just Happens That Way (Audio CD)
This girl defiantly has talent, no doubt, but this album felt as if she was playing it safe. Her tunes were easy, repetitive, her solos were soft...hardly any soul in here whatsoever. She tried to sing in one of the songs, which to me, sounded horrendous. I hope she doesn't attempt to sing in the future. Her saxophone skills are her strong point above all. Over all, it's a good cd in a jazz collection for easy listening.

"Lucy's", the first track on this cd, just keeps playing in my head and I don't want it to stop. Every song on this cd is excellent. One more song with Mindi singing and I would buy two of the albums to make sure one did not wear out. As much as I love smooth jazz, it almost seems that Mindi has moved the genre just a notch towards pop and the results are fantastic. Buy this cd and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This girl is great!, April 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: It Just Happens That Way (Audio CD)
Newcomer Mindi Abair changes my outlook on jazz music. I don't listen to much jazz, as you might guess, but this girl really has a lot of potential...It is easy listening and sounds hip. She brings out pop sounds in her sharp jazz beats. Mindi also has a beautiful voice. The combination of her music and vocal takes the songs to the next level. "It Just Happened That Way" is a album that people of all ages will appreciate. I saw her perform in February with a friend of mine, and was really impressed. Listening to her music live is so much different than listen to the album. She was absolutely amazing. I definitely recommend this CD to everyone.

I've had this CD for over a year and listened to it countless times, and my experience is different than that of many of the other reviewers.

This CD is rock-solid from start to finish. I'm not a big fan of her cover of "Save Tonight" but it *is* well-done. IMHO, her sax playing is stronger on this CD than her follow-up CD "Come As You Are."

I find her style of play is varied on this CD; she has a driving-yet playful-yet almost sultry tone on "Flirt" and moves to a wide-open, trumpetesque tone on "As Good As It Gets." Both convey the feeling she must have had (based on the song titles) incredibly well. Of course, many people will recognize the theme from the movie "Save the Last Dance." Interesting movie, great song. All the other tracks are just as solid as these - the album is put together so well that almost any song could be a person's favorite, depending on their taste and mood. I know many people say certain artists' songs all sound the same. It took me years to understand their point of view, but I finally realized: they usually think it all sounds the same because they're hearing the mastering of the disc(s), despite the songs being played in different time meters, different keys, and sounding very different. I believe the same is true of this CD, but I wouldn't disagree that generally speaking many (but not all) of her songs have the same "flavor" to them. This isn't necessarily bad; looking at the pop and R&B genres, most of the popular artists have been retreading the same meters, keys, and beats for years. It gets old after a while, but I've not found that to be the case with Abair's music.
