Science Wins,
By
This review is from: Just Hit It (Hardcover)
On page 117, Frank Thomas states, "Standard clubs will do fine until you shoot consistently in the mid to low 70s." "Until then, work on improving you instead of your clubs."Finally, someone with substantial technical knowledge of the evolution of equipment and the history of golf has finally come out and said it. The job of manufacturers is to market and sell their products, but it matters very little to the vast majority of golfers which type of equipment they use. "In forty years, there are only three innovations that mean anything significant to your game: perimeter weighting, the graphite shaft and titanium drivers", page 70. Unlike most technical books on equipment, this is written in layman's language with numerous wise-cracks to spice up his points of view. Unless most players want to keep pouring their hard earned money down a black hole, this book is a must read for both the average and avid golfer.

Just the facts about the Golf Equipment Industry,

This review is from: Just Hit It (Hardcover)
For 26 years as the USGA Technical Director, Frank Thomas has written a poignant book about the evolution of golf technology. He covers the technology and myths of equipment and what has translated to the biggest technological advances in the game.He writes in a clear but not necessarily concise manner but he makes important points through history and vignettes that should guide you in what you really need to play the game. I highly recommend reading this book. Other books that I recommend that cover similar subjects are below : The Right Sticks: Equipment Myths That Could Wreck Your Golf Game The Mad Science of Golf: On moving past golf industry hype and learning to play better golf The Search for the Perfect Golf Club

As a long-time ardent golfer, I have read many golf books. Just Hit It is one of the most boring. It dwells on the history of the game and the many stages of improvements in golf technology. Most of the highlights of this info were basically rehashes of information I already knew. The sections on the modern game and the prospects for future advances were not worth the effort of reading the entire history.

I found this book an excellent resource for golfers of any level, but especially for us weekend hacks who love the game. The author provides an interesting history lesson, as well as a sobering overview of golf equipment as we see being marketed today. I strongly urge anyone who is about to spend hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars on new sticks to read this book first. I trust you won't regret it.

I bought the book based on the review in the New York Times. I was disappointed in the book. Too much "filler' and not enough real knowledge.
