Book Description

JUST JAKE introduces readers to sixth-grader Jake, whose life is turned upside down when his family moves from Florida to Maryland, where Jake must adapt to a new school. Jake has always ranked the kids at school in his hand-made, humorous “Kid Cards,” and when he arrives at his new school, Jake starts building a new collection, befriending as many people as he can while staying under the radar from the school bully. But what happens when the school bully decides Jake's next in line for annihilation and his Kid Cards get into the wrong hands?!! JUST JAKE is a genuine—and as Jake himself would say, AWESOME!—world of school, family, friends, and teachers; it’s the product of a writer talented well beyond his years.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—Sixth-grader Jake Mathews's popularity has gone from a rank of 10 to a low of three, when he is forced to move from Flordia to Maryland. Jake's "Awesomeness" is put to the test in his new town as he struggles to make friends and fit in; resulting in his previously unshakeable confidence beginning to crumble. Marcionette, a sixth grader himself, creates a humorous character who takes readers on an enjoyable journey as he triumphs over a bully, fights with his explosive older sister, attempts to climb back to the top of the social ladder, and finds a group of friends he calls the "misfit toys". At times, Jake's arrogance can be overwhelming, but readers will see through it and realize it is simply a yearning to be accepted. Just Jake is filled with doodles, cut out photos, rules of Awesomeness, and clever "Kid Cards." Fans of Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" (Abrams) and Rachel Renée Russell's "Dork Diaries"(S & S) will enjoy this title.—Megan McGinnis, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

This is next only to Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Tales of a Part Time Indian. It is laugh out loud funny. When Jake met the knitting boy I could not stop laughing. This is shockingly well-written. I do not care who you are. Seriously, buy this book. I do not know Jake, I live in Newfoundland , Canada, but Bravo! I cannot wait for the next book. Are you sure you are 13? You must have truly amazing parents. What a lucky boy to have a sister who is such a "worthy nemesis". Good for you! I hope you sell a million copies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Hilariously funny! February 20, 2014
By Joseph
Just Jake, a book targeted to kid’s ages 8 to 14, has hit the bull’s-eye. Just Jake is a novel based on true experiences. The author, Jake Marcionette, knows about moving around and trying to stay in touch with school. He has moved many times in his thirteen year life, living in such places as Singapore, New York, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida. But don’t let that fool you into thinking he is just your standard genius. Jake is a normal kid. He likes to watch baseball and plays lacrosse and basketball. Jake understands what it is like to try to fit in. He can relate to what you or your child faces at school.
Just Jake is a book that will entertain your kids. Jake tells about the kids he encounters at school and how he deals with them. In the book he makes kid cards (kind of like baseball cards with kids instead of players) that describe the people he meets. Unfortunately the cards fall into the wrong hands and get him in a lot of trouble. I could not unglue my eyes from the book to find out how Jake gets out of this dilemma and others including his sister, Alexis. By the way, I am a 13 year old reader who has met the real life Jake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny & Cute, Good gift for grandkids February 15, 2014
By Lizzy

I saw this advertised on national news and was impressed with the kid author's moxy to pick up the phone and call publisher after publisher for his manuscript! So, I bought it for my 13-year-old grandson whose family relocates every couple of years, because of my son's job. I previewed the book before mailing to them, as I didn't want to send anything offensive. Some of the illustrations could be considered edgy (but then I'm an old fuddy-duddy), but the writing itself is amazing - funny, touching, insightful - particularly for an author so young. It was entertaining to say the least. Good job, Jake.

“Just Jake” written by Jake Marcionette, twelve years old boy, and full of funny illustrations made by Victor Rivas Villa is the first book of a new series that bears the same name.

The book will introduce a boy named Jake who starts with the sixth grade after his family moved to Maryland from Florida. The each relocation is hard, especially if you’re of such age as Jake, therefore readers will witness Jake’s adventures while going through a not so pleasant adaptation to the new environment – school, teachers and friends.
And some harmless and funny things that Jake did back in the old school, here will prove to be a problem for one school bully, and Jake will become his target…

Based on this first book in series already can be seen that “Just Jake” is the beginning of an extremely entertaining and popular series for young readers. A classic situation where a boy/girl hero comes into a new environment, meets new friends and experience exciting adventures is not a novelty in literature for young readers, but the way in which the theme was presented by the author, of same age as his literary counterpart, while an illustrator further spice the things up with entertaining images, makes this book very fun to read, and its 160 pages much too short.

Hence, waiting for Jake’s new adventures for many preteen readers will certainly be difficult; however, “Just Jake” is a book that with its charm, humor and excitement enables multiple and always entertaining reading to shorten the time.

More About the Author

Hello Everyone!

It's me Jake! I'm your typical kid that loves playing and watching sports, hanging with my friends and wishing for snow days. I actually DO have a similar diabolical sister like the one I wrote about in Just Jake. I like to think of the book as semi-autobiographical. Lacrosse and basketball are my sports of choice and I love the Celtics, Patriots and the Red Sox.

I started writing in elementary school. Not because I had some burning passion for typing out my thoughts. Nope. I was FORCED to write by my mom; part of her wicked plot to ruin my chances of a carefree and fun summer.

After a few years of practice, I started to love writing and I hope you get a chance to read my books. To learn more about me, please visit and follow me on Twitter @jakemarcionette
