Editorial Reviews

Review

"Catherine Doty's Just Kidding provides a pleasant respite from adulthood. And, unlike Ponce de Leon who felt a lot older after failing to find the fountain of youth, her sharply drawn cartoons plunge you back into childhood and leave you feeling younger and refreshed." -- Hal Sirowitz, author of Mother Said

4.0 out of 5 stars cartoons from a poet?, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Kidding (Paperback)
I saw this book on a poetry site where "Cat" had a poem and thought , "What would cartoons by a poet be like?" - so I ordered a copy. Well, they certainly come from a poet's eye and sense. Definitely not ones the kids will laugh at (well, maybe some really bright kids) but for the rest of us...I would recommend them. I'd like to see her poetry offered - maybe even illustrated?

Perceptive & amusing collection of 'toons by a veteran teacher from the New Jersey Writers in the Schools program. An adult observing children who more often than not are reflections & memories of herself. Underlying message: Maturity means becoming one's own enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU MUST GET THIS BOOK!, May 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Kidding (Paperback)
Whether you've got kids, had kids, or have been a kid, JUST KIDDING is a must-have book! Doty captures childhood in drawings that will make you howl. Her a-b-c's are hysterical; her horoscopes will change your perceptions of life. Her sense of reality intersects with her sense of humor -- and results in a book that manages to be both charming and side-splitting. Buy the book. You'll find yourself buying multiple copies for friends and relations. You'll become a Doty addict!
