Eddy Meets Yannah - Just Like...,
This review is from: Just Like (Audio CD)
Although Croatia might not be well-known in the electronic music world, Eddy Meets Yannah hopes to change that. Their debut album, _Just Like..._, starts off with "Reach the Sky," a burst of samba sunniness that shows that happiness is a universal emotion. Vocalist Jana Valdevit has a smooth quality to her singing that touches as much on pop as it does on jazz. On "Shamed," she brings to mind mid-80s singer Basia. Her English sounds slightly awkward, but its melodic quality comes through strongly. The album as a whole is aurally pleasing -- the instrumental jazzdance of "Just Like" and "Perfect Day for Playin' Football" are as peppy as can be -- but you can get the feeling that you've heard this all before. Still, you can still take pleasure in the brightness of "Return to Paklenica" or the cheery "Smile." The only misstep would be the spoken word, "From Da Rooftop," which suffers from inane pseudo-hip-hop lyrics. So while this album won't put Croatia on the map, it might remind you that something's there.
