The Battle of the Vegetables
The Battle of the Vegetables
Leeks who believe a cow is one of Santa’s reindeer, carrots who accept an invitation to a party given by rabbits, and a leek and carrot couple whose romance precipitates total vegetable warfare are the hapless protagonists in these satiric, snarky stories. Hardcover

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Floss, the Border collie in Lewis's previous book of that title (Candlewick, 1992), now has puppies, and her young owners are allowed to keep only one of them. The children watch the five littermates as they grow and play, trying to find the one that will be just like Floss. All of the pups enjoy playing except Sam, the littlest, who always keeps close to his mother. When he encounters the family's flock of sheep, however, he stands his ground, stares them down, and reveals his natural talent for herding. The family decides to keep him and find good homes for his brothers and sisters. From the endpapers, with their soft colored-pencil illustration of a snowy grassland landscape, to the appealing portrayal of the dogs and the children, Lewis has created another heartwarming book.

From Booklist

Ages 3^-6. Story and illustrations are full of simple charm in the latest episode featuring border collie Floss and her warm farm family. When Floss has puppies, Father says the children can keep only one. But which of the five should they choose? It becomes obvious that brave, self-starter Sam is the right choice after he fearlessly faces a herd of sheep--" Just like Floss." The family then welcomes Sam into the clan, vowing to love him--" Just like Floss." Lewis evokes a cozy rural landscape with soft, muted, and comforting tones, but it's her characterizations of the lovable border collie puppies that will melt the most hearts. My youngest very much enjoyed having the Kim Lewis books read to him from the ages of about one to four. They were his favourite books.
Kim Lewis started writing the books when her children were young because she could not find any books that showed farming as she thought it ought to be showed. The scenes reflect the Northumberland countryside where her husband is a sheep farmer. The children in the books are her children. Floss is/was their dog Fly.
They are a nice timeless read.

A must have for Border Collie fanciers! Also makes for a good childrens book in general. The storyline is cute, the illustrations from cover to cover are beautiful, and the artist depicts the breed characteristics splendidly. I highly recommend it!

I recently purchased Just Like Floss for my 4 year old, and it has become an instant favorite. Just like Floss tells the story of a border collie and her pups, and how the children on the farm go about chosing the puppy they will keep. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story line is one that all will enjoy. It reveals to even the very young reader, some of the characteristics of border collies. Having owned a border collie on a working farm, I enjoy reading this book to my daughter, as it brings back pleasant memories for her. I reccomend Just like Floss to owners of border collies or the general dog enthusiast.

Format: Paperback
Gorgeous pencil crayon illustrations of rolling rural countryside, charming barnyard animals, and round-faced children. A simple, down-home story of farm life and pets in Northumberland. Meet Floss by Kim Lewis.

By itself the story, which are set in rural England, is nothing to write home about, but the unique illustrations will draw your children (and probably you) to the book all on their own! It's also a perfect library checkout choice if you're in search of something quality for your little ones to flip through and enjoy without reading. Lewis depicts border collies beautifully, so this story will especially appeal to dog lovers.

Which one will the farmer & children choose to keep out of Floss's litter of pups? This story, occurring in the winter months of snow, is a delight for all ages. The artwork, as usual, is superb bringing everything to life before your eyes. Love dogs and puppies? You will love this book.

A great choice for your library collection.
