Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 6. This entrancing book allows 14 artists who illustrate books for children to present themselves through both art and words. Representing the Hispanic, Black, Asian-American, Jewish, and Native American experiences, the contributors discuss important moments in their lives and how they became artists. Each double-page spread is composed of a full-page self-portrait opposite an explanation of the picture and a photograph of the subject as a child and at present. A list of the authors' titles published by Children's Book Press concludes the book. This is a wonderful browsing item as well as an excellent teaching tool for those who want to approach their students with the idea that we can communicate with both pictures and words. Both media are legitimate, and they work beautifully in tandem, as this book so beautifully testifies.?Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly vibrant, truly multicultural children's book., January 23, 1998
By A Customer
A lively engaging book that captures the essence of the multicultural ideal. Readers are introduced to contemporary artists with many diverse cultural backgrounds through short autobiographical sketches, photographs, and self portraits. An explanation of the self portrait is also included in the sketch. This is a great way for kids (or adults for that matter) to learn about art and multiculturism at the same time!

Love this book. I use it for a jumping off point for my class, to write about themselves in an interesting and imaginative way. The illustrations are colorful and unique to each artist/author's contribution in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful portraits and stories used in the classroom, August 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I use this book and Honoring Our Ancestors: Stories and Paintings by Fourteen Artists by the same publisher, as a first-week activity in my 5th/ 6th classroom. We create self-portraits of ourselves and/ or family, and this book really helps because some of the paintings are abstract and aren't necessarily "traditional" face portraits. My kids love hearing the stories and I read them while they work on their own.
I've had many kids remind me throughout the year of stories they remember about the artists, and many are inspirational because the artists came from a variety of backgrounds.
