Book Description

The sleepy town of Liberty hasn’t seen murder in…well…ever. Residents are stunned when the body of a young woman is found strangled, and reporters at the Liberty Chronicle are thrilled, rather disturbingly, over the biggest news story to hit town this century.

Lizzie Hart has even bigger problems. Lately, she can’t seem to concentrate on her job as copy editor at the Chronicle with the new hunky investigative reporter, Blake Morgan, swaggering around the office. How can a girl work when she’s using all of her energy combating Blake-induced hot flashes and struggling to repress the giggly inner schoolgirl that’s constantly rearing her dorky head? It’s a good thing that Blake barely knows Lizzie exists.

After an odd string of events, however, Lizzie begins to wonder if Blake is really as fabulous as she has fantasized. When Lizzie and Blake find a co-worker dead, Blake’s personality changes completely—and not in a good way. Even though the police rule the death as an accident, Lizzie immediately suspects foul play and senses a connection to the recent murder. She is determined to bring the killer to justice, but is having some trouble getting her Nancy Drew on thanks to the pesky stalker she’s picked up—Blake Morgan. Wait, didn’t she want him to follow her around and pay attention to her? Not like this. Blake has turned from cool and smooth to cold and downright scary, making Lizzie wonder if he should be next on her suspect list.

Just A Little Crush by Caroline Fardig is a fun read with just the right balance of mystery to romance. The main character is relatable, someone I would love to hang around with. The ending is unexpected and satisfying. A great summer read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious May 9, 2013

I'm actually surprised with the ending. Usually I figure it out, but the killer was not who I suspected...I was laughing out loud at the things coming out of Lizzie's mouth. She was witty at times when it seemed inappropriate, it was hilarious. Great book...I was finished reading in less than 24 hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun romantic murder mystery April 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fun mix of romance and murder in small-town America. Likable characters and an interesting story. I didn't guess who done it, which I often do. Just enough romance to make it sexy without being over the top. I definitely want to read more from this author.

Joy C.'s Review

STORYLINE: Life goes from predictable to dangerous when a copyeditor in a Midwestern town is dropped in the middle of what turns out to be a series of murders. Along with her crush, Lizzie Hart follows clues that put her in the path of a deranged and determined killer. Along the way she finds a little romance to sweeten the deal.

PLAYERS: Lizzie Hart is smart, snarky and bored with her job of editing articles. When the reader meets her, she’s spinning her wheels and moving from day to day. The arrival of her crush, Blake Morgan, is the highpoint of her workday. By the end of the story, things turn around and she is more in command of herself in Blake’s presence.

Blake Morgan is the newest and most eligible man in town. Of course, Morgan has the attention of a fair number of ladies. At first glance, he seems self-absorbed and sure of himself, but his character develops nicely in the telling of the story.

I liked Lizzie’s voice. There were some very funny moments in the novel and the humor comes mainly from Lizzie’s thought processes and how she views the changes in her relationship with Blake.

I realize this might just be part of the writer’s current style, but I found that some of the speech tags are more a way of cluing the reader in to the speaker’s emotions and what the character is up to than anything else. Fardig uses terms like ‘I snark’, ‘I hedge’, ‘I announce’ ‘Blake says uneasily’ and ‘Blake says unconvincingly’. In the first three cases, the dialogue could have stood on its own with ‘said’ used to back it up. In the latter case, I also understood what was happening without being told how or why the speaker said what he did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant and Unpredictable September 8, 2013
By MOH3
Format:Paperback
Fun and cute. The ending was not predictable, which is always nice and I appreciate how Fardig got there.(Nothing worse than a mystery, however fluffy and fun, that ends with a thud.) This is a quick read-- the book equivalent of a pleasant acquanitance that you enjoy seeing. Characterization is a tad weak. I felt like Lizzie Heart was kind of a blank slate-- which was strange considering the book is written in the first person. This created a little disconnect for me. A previous reviewer mentioned the first person being difficult to read. I concur, but not because the first person was poorly written. It's just that I didn't get a strong enough sense of Lizzie's personality from the voice. It could have used a bit more effernescence. Still, this was an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Annnnddddd the killer is..... August 25, 2013

My friend turned me onto this book after she saw something on Facebook about it becoming a best seller. My expectations were high, and It's Just a Little Crush met each one. The mystery was compelling. I was completely surprised. The love story was believable and unique. The humor had me rolling with laughter. Lizzie is so incredibly real and her mega crush on Blake is something I can totally relate to. I liked how his character changes and deepens. It was unexpected and intriguing. I think anyone who likes cozy mysteries will be crushing on this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story October 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this as a sample and ended up buying it just to continue reading it. The author does a great job of keeping your interest and setting the mystery up. Lizzie Hart works for her hometown newspaper and has a crush on her coworker from Chicago. While trying to sell subscriptions at the fair, she finds one of her coworkers dead in a puddle of water. From this point on, it's a whodunit with situational and physical humor. The author did a great job of keeping you in suspense and developing the characters and their relationship with each other. I will definitely read her next book. Are you one that enjoys whodunits with humor and sarcasm? If so, you will love this one.

This book was very light reading, but all in all it was OK. I tend to like stories with a little more substance, but then I still was interested enough to finish it.
