5.0 out of 5 stars Helped my son when he got lost
I highly recommend this book! We recently went to a very crowded water park where we got separated from our 4 year old son. We found him, or I should say he found us, about 10 minutes later. He went up to a lifeguard and told them he couldn't find his mommy, then proceeded to give them my name and his name. When we asked him how he knew what to do, he said, it was...

I highly recommend this book! We recently went to a very crowded water park where we got separated from our 4 year old son. We found him, or I should say he found us, about 10 minutes later. He went up to a lifeguard and told them he couldn't find his mommy, then proceeded to give them my name and his name. When we asked him how he knew what to do, he said, it was because of the "Just Lost!" book and what we had talked about if he got lost. This book gives you a great opportunity to discuss a plan with your child if they should, heaven forbid, ever get lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, November 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Lost! (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I have been reading Mercer Mayer books to my children since they were one year old, and they love everyone of them. Just Lost is now my favourite, because of what took place in the book, actually came true this Spring while vacationing in Florida while we were at a mall. My 6 year old son, who was "just lost", did exactly what Little Critter did in this story. When we finally found him, his actual first words were, "I did just what they said in the Little Critter book Mommy". I was so proud of him, and can't believe that this book would come to his mind at a time like that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by a 7-year-old, May 2, 2000

This story is a good one. It is called "Just Lost". It reminded me that I should stay by my mom or dad at the mall. And I learned that I should say "Wait for me" so I won't get lost.

4.0 out of 5 stars My review of Just Lost, September 22, 2004

I think the book is very good. I liked reading it. The book gave a lot of information about not getting lost and what to do if you get lost. If you are ever lost in a mall you need to go to an adult and tell them that you are lost or that your mom is lost. I also like the pictures that are in the book. The pictures helped to make the book interesting

That's how I'd describe this book in the "Little Critter" series, but then again, that's how I'd describe a lot of them.

This book is about Little Critter and his family visiting a shopping mall. There's a "jillion" critters there and Little Critter's Mom encourages him to stay close. But despite his best efforts, Little Critter's Mom gets lots. :D Fortunately, Little Critter knows just what to do and once they've read this book, kids will too.

The power of this book has already been attested to, so there's not really much more I can say about that. This is a story that kids can remember and if they ever get lost, they'll know just what to do.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Preparatory Story for a Potentially Frightening Experience, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Just Lost! (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
The Little Critter series mostly consist of short stories about a child whose ordinary experiences young readers will identify with. Many of them are useful for introducing new (and potentially frightening) scenarios to young readers. In this one, Little Critter gets separated from his mother and brother at the mall, so he finds a clerk in a store to have his mother paged. The story is narrated by Little Critter who tells of his experiences with sly irony-- he reports to the clerk, "My mom is lost!" and when he is reunited with his family, he declares, "I knew she was glad I found them." Children will enjoy this humorous perspective, which lightens the fear that accompanies Little Critter's vulnerable situation.

We have used the Little Critter books to prepare our children for new experiences, and this one in particular is helpful because Little Critter does exactly what a lost child should do: he finds a woman with a name tag, working behind a cash register, who introduces him to a security guard wearing a uniform. Not only does this book prepare a child for the emotional challenges of being lost, it also provides an example of what to do, and introduces the kinds of people most likely to protect and help a lost child. The story quality is good, but not exceptional, so I recommend reading this book a few times until the lesson is learned, and then phasing it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son thinks he IS Little Critter..., October 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Lost! (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
This is one of the first Little Critter books I purchased for my three year old (now 5) son. He learned to read his first word thanks to Little Critter. Every time he sees the page where Little Critter first loses his mother, my son calls out at the top of his lungs, "MOM!!!!".

Critter books are wonderfully imaginative. I like the subtexts put into the stories with creative use of illustration, and the opportunity for children to read the parts of their favourite characters (like the big rhino security guard) in silly voices is great for getting them into reading the story.

My Little Critter only sits still for a few types of books, and the Little Critter series is definitely one of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, July 23, 2011

This book was great to read to my daughter. She realized that she really needs to pay attention and stay with me when we go to a big place. She knows that if she gets lost to look for a police or security man.

4.0 out of 5 stars My nieces and I really enjoy Little Critter books, August 31, 2008
This review is from: Just Lost! (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
They're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.

This details what happens to Little Critter when he - I mean, his *mother* - gets lost.

He does exactly what I would have done at his age, what I was told to do - he finds somebody in a store, eats a snack, and has his mother paged.

Perfectly sensible, and everybody gets found.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the worst ever children's book from a safety viewpoint!!, July 11, 2008
By
This review is from: Just Lost! (Pictureback(R)) (Paperback)
I'm glad to see that this book no longer appears to be in print new. Little Critter books have often been favorites of my kids, but this one actually found its way to the trash (something that makes me cringe)because of the HORRENDOUS message it gives about getting separated from your parent in a store. First, Little Critter doesn't stay in the store that he loses his mom in. He doesn't ask another mom to help, which is the first thing a lost child should do. Next, instead of staying with the female clerk of the toy store while they search for his mom, he leaves ALONE with a security guard and goes ALONE to a security office with this guard. All of these things are absolutely contrary to any responsible advice that a child safety expert would give, and could put the child in much more danger. Please do not buy this book, and instead buy one of the many quality little critter books after familiarizing yourself with them. This book will teach your child to be UNSAFE in a lost situation.
