Review

"I share a deep affinity with the Popcaks and the way they present the faith. Their latest book, Just Married, is loaded with their typical winsome wisdom and advice. They help newly married couples unpack the great mystery of marriage and discover the divine love story that is behind their own. Every married couple--newly married or otherwise--will benefit from this book."
--Christopher West, Author of Fill These Hearts

"Just Marriedshould be required reading for every recently married Catholic Couple. Christian marriage is a call to heroic love. It should not be surprising that living this vocation well does not happen without prayer and effort. Greg and Lisa provide many helpful insights into the challenges that young couples encounter as well as practical strategies on how to overcome what otherwise will become obstacles to their happiness. Married couples honor and praise God most beautifully by striving daily to grow in their love for each other in the Lord. There is nothing more important that a couple can do to build up the Church and make a better world than to do whatever it takes to make their marriage strong and healthy. The Popcaks provide a practical pathway to help couples enjoy the abundant life God desires for them in this world and to help each other make it together to heaven." --Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann, Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas

"Thank you, Greg and Lisa! Just Married is a treasure for today's newly (and not so newly!) married couples. A guide this rich with grace and wisdom can only come from a deeply faithful Catholic married couple seasoned through years of marriage, professional practice, and prayer. This is theology of the body for the newly married couple." --Damon Owens, Executive Director, Theology of the Body Institute

"We are so happy to be able to give the young people in our lives a copy of Just Married. This is a book filled with personal testimony, evidence from science, years of counseling experience, and, most importantly, a hopeful vision of marriage rooted in faith and nourished by prayer." --Tim and Sue Muldoon, Authors of Six Sacred Rules for Families

Oh, the things I would've missed if I hadn't read this book. It wasn't necessarily written for me: I've been married ten years this year. Honestly, I intended to skim through it and pull together a general review.

But I couldn't.

I got sucked in, just as surely as the dog hair gets into the toothpaste container. (Don't ask.) I was intrigued and nodding and (dare I suggest it?) making notes of things and learning a thing or three...

This book put words to things that I've felt at a gut level and have struggled to articulate. There are ideas in this book that you can put into immediate practice, resources that will help you grow in your marriage and as a person, and insight that will turn your marriage into more than it was before.

I agree wholeheartedly with the plug on the front of the book by Christopher West: "Every married couple--newly married or otherwise--will benefit from this book." Yeah. What he said.

In fact, I wish we'd had it when we got married. I wasn't religious at all then and my husband was not a practicing Catholic. Nevertheless, I stand by that. It would have helped us tremendously.

I don't like self-help books generally but this one is spot-on for issues that we've encountered in our 30 years of marriage and after helping with our parish's marriage retreat for seven years.

Greg and Lisa Popcak are at very good putting issues in a way that both opens our eyes and makes us want to do better. These three tidbits were in the same section, although not connected by the authors in the way I'm going to do below. They are a sample of what stayed with me from the book. And, to be honest, they stayed with me months after I read the book.

===============
The biggest contributor to marital problems and, eventually, marital breakdown is that husbands and wives tend to love their own comfort zones more than they love each other.
===============

Ow. Recognize anyone? I did. In the mirror.

With that in mind, consider this.

====================
The fact that marriage is a sacrament means, at least in part, that marriage is all about getting you and your spouse out of your comfort zones in order to create a unified couple.
===================

Woah. That elevates our marriage and my feelings about my place in it. It's more important than just me and my husband.

And now, to the practicalities.

===================
Learning to love your spouse more than you love your comfort zone means being willing to be loving to your spouse in ways that make absolutely no sense to you but mean everything to your mate.
===================

Ok. It doesn't have to make sense.

I am so grateful to have read this book before getting married! I feel, based on reading this book, that my fiancee and I will avoid many of the trappings that newly married people may find themselves. I particularly love that Dr. Greg and his wife, Lisa, shared their own personal stories in this book - this is a new approach from their earlier books. This very personal insight on their own marriage helped us to see how the science behind all of the relationship research is applied in practice. I highly recommend not only reading this book, but using it as a stepping stone for deeper conversations with one's spouse or fiancee to improve one's relationship - even those with a currently great relationship.

Great advice and ideas on surviving and thriving in early marriage. They loved other books by the Popcak's, and this is more of the same. They really love this book.

This book is written by a man who not only has a lot of experience in his field, but also is obviously very much committed to his own marriage. I have read almost all of the Popcak books, including the ones Mr. Popcak has co-authored with his wife, and am impressed by the wisdom each of them has to offer. They give not only a feel good message, but practical advise that REALLY does work in real life. I especially love the chapter on how to handle in-law problems (for more good advice on this subject, see their book "God Help Me! These People Are Driving Me Nuts!"). Great book!
