Book Description

The minor leagues are largely misunderstood, more well known for the players who have skipped through their ranks than the ones who reside in them. They’re a mysterious land of hotels, bus rides, and clubhouses. Upon being drafted out of UC Irvine by the Phillies, right-handed pitcher Eric Pettis didn’t quite know what he was getting himself into.

Just A Minor Perspective allows readers to jump into Eric’s mind and experience the journey along with him. The narrative resembles stream-of-consciousness as he describes the good, the bad, and the ugly of the minor leagues as it hits him square in the face for the first time.

From his first day in Philadelphia...

"I tried to open the door in a manner that would exude confidence in the off chance that my new teammate was an expert on body language and would be analyzing my entry."

To the heat of the battle...

"As I hopped over the foul line I could feel my body try to rev itself up. It was pleading with me to get something going. It knew how significant this was... As hard as my body tried, it couldn’t muster anything. I tried again and again to turn the key, but my engine just wouldn’t start."

Eric gives an honest, pointed, and often humorous account of what he feels when he’s feeling it. Just A Minor Perspective is a gripping story of one man’s attempt to find his place in a new world; a scramble to conquer the first rung of the professional baseball ladder.

Just a Minor Perspective is the story of (recently released) Phillies organizational pitcher, Eric Pettis and his first season as a professional baseball player. A lot of baseball fans often wonder about life in the minors and who's there. Of course, we know all about the guys in the big leagues. Many biographies are written from that perspective, but few are written about the minors. These are the guys that sacrifice so much for the game that they love just for that chance to make it to the major league level. It's not every day that a guy going through these struggles lets you in on his life.
In Eric's book, you feel as if you are going through the season with him. Through his adjustments and his up and downs, you find yourself rooting for him every step of the way. He does a great job pulling you in and describing his life well enough to feel as if you lived it with him or watched every game from the stands. While it is a quick read, it is a well written book with details and humor to make it very enjoyable. I cannot wait for more writings from him and to follow him through the rest of his baseball journey. Eric you've made a fan for life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for any baseball/minor league fan April 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Recently-released Phillies minor league pitcher Eric Pettis' book is a great read from start to finish. Many baseball fans know of their major league team, but the journey through the minor leagues is where it all starts.

Fans may know the minor league teams exist, and go to games, but how many in attendance would know the names and faces? In the era of social media (such as Twitter), fans get unprecedented access to a player's journey to the MLB (if they make it), real-time/near instant interaction, and get an in-depth look into the daily grind of professional sports.

Eric's book is fairly short and a quick read, but you get the feeling that you're in the stands watching, riding on the bus, etc. His descriptions are excellent and keep you wanting more. I would recommend this for any fan of minor league baseball...no, let me correct myself. I would recommend this book for any baseball fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unsophisticated Yet Interesting May 17, 2012

I found "Just A Minor Perspective" to be an easy and interesting read. The book is exactly what the title states and is presented in exactly that manner. Offered in chronological order of development, it is a retrospective statement of his experiences and point of view, through his first year of development as a professional ballplayer. Though I have attended many games, I knew nothing of the minor league's system of operation. This book definitely helped enlighten me. Apparently this is Mr. Pettis' first published book. While his story seems of ample opportunity for creating suspenseful interest, he often throws the punch before entering the ring. As unsophisticated as this presentation is, Pettis' story remains mildly interesting and informative. You can't help but root for the guy as he progresses along. I'm now also rooting for him to progress as an author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice short book
A quick and entertaining read, not on the level of Hayhurst's minor league memoirs but we'll worth the low price.
