5.0 out of 5 stars I Wish They Were In Town MORE!, July 25, 2000

This review is from: Just Outside of Town (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of hearing Mandrill LIVE and in PERSON five times last week and they were AWESOME! Monday, July 17th they were the featured band at Robinhood Dell East Park in Phila PA. Brass Construction was the opening act, and they were really good. But Mandrill was at the top of their game and they played like Maestros. When the show ended the audience was BREATHLESS! We were on our feet the whole time Mandrill was playing. They had FOUR Shows in Brooklyn which were all standing room only, each show was better than the previous one: Tuesday, July 18th they appeared at FT Green Park, Wednesday, July 19th's show in Linden Park was rained out, Thursday July 20th they appeared at MetroTech Center in the afternoon and at Von King Park in the evening. I was at all of the shows and as I said, they just got better, if that's possible, each time we heard them. WHAT A TREAT! Friday, July 21st, they appeared at S.O.B.'s in downtown Manhattan, NY which was the last show. They were so dynamic, the crowd didn't want them to leave the stage. Why doesn't this band get the recognition that they so well deserve? There are so many bands that don't possess the talent that Mandrill has, but they get more notariety. Mandrill is better now then they were in the 70's and we know how great they were THEN! The Wilson Brothers are Masters of their music and in my opinion, their talent supercedes other bands that play similar music, past or present. If you didn't get a chance to see any of Mandrill's concerts last week, what a shame! You missed PRIME TIME Mandrill at their best. MANDRILL, please come back to the East Coast to perform again real soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mandrill at their best, January 8, 2002
This review is from: Just Outside of Town (Audio CD)
A superb album by Mandrill. Definately among their best works if not the best (like I think). Mango Meat and Fat City Strut are to be found on many 70's funk compilations and they are the best known tracks on this album. Love Song was a second single release. Two Sisters of Mystery -tune was succesfully sampled by Public Enemy on By the Time I Get to Arizona, (1991 the Enemy Strikes Black). Also We Never Die and lesser known She Ain't Looking too Tough are brilliant songs. The rest are instrumentals. I dig Africus Respectus more than Aspiration Flame. Interlude is just an interlude. If you can't find this on vinyl (the symbolic art work of the cover is stunning)- by the cd.

I first heard of Mandrill when I was a kid and first heard this album when I was growing up. I have almost all their albums except for maybe two or three. Almost twenty years later, I rediscovered this album again. This was one of their best albums (the first three were ok if not decent, Mandrilland is the best). Mango Meat, Never Die, Love Song and Fat City Strut definitely are the highlights. You can hear in Mango Meat the latin-flavor groove, Never Die, has a sort of a rock feel to it and Love Song, well straight slow with a great horn and organ solos. Fat City Strut, in my opinion is broken up into two or three pieces, like some of the earlier Mandrill instrumentals on previous albums. The rest of the tracks are fine. Aspiration Flame is one track that I can listen to over and over again just for the music.
