A Wondeful Book,

I teach inner city second graders who rarely leave their neighborhood. They loved learning about Amish children and were astounded to know that the Amish community is another community in their country. Patricia Palacco has a way of writing about other cultures, children, and situations that my students really enjoy. Her books help them become better readers because after I read the book to them, they will pick it up to read on their own.

Patricia Polacco is a favorite author in our house, but I think this book tops them all for us. She handles explanations of the Amish way of life in a simple and respectful way without diminishing how children behave universally. The illustrations are fabulous and tell more of the story, as well. I couldn't find this particular book at the bookstore any more, and I am grateful there is an Amazon.com so I can still buy copies for others.

Your children will beg you to "Read it again.",

Patricia Polacco has written many books, one more engaging than the next. My two girls, now ages 9 and 12, discovered the magic of her storytelling ability many years ago and, even today, a new Polacco book is cause for celebration. But of all of Polacco's books, Just Plain Fancy, has delighted them most of all.

"Just Plain Fancy," a fanciful tale about Mennonites.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Plain Fancy (Paperback)
Polacco's engaging pictures and charming story do delight children. Teachers might, however, expand use of this story to point out the differences between fiction and fact. To Mennonites, an anabaptist Pennsylvania German group, headcoverings have religious significance. They are not 'rewards' as indicated in 'Just Plain Fancy.' Readers should be cautioned that this is a 'fanciful' tale.
