"JUST PLAY" is without doubt one of the best CD's I have ever listened to.

Tom Kennedy's last and excellent acoustic bass album was recorded in 2001 with Mundell Lowe and Joe LaBarbera - but this latest offering reaches new heights.

Recorded last September around a core trio of Tom on acoustic bass , long time friend and musical collaborator Dave Weckl on drums and Renee Rosnes on piano , they are joined by some stunning musicians on 9 jazz standards that last over 70 minutes.

The album opens with a tour de force version of "Airegin" with George Garzone featured on Tenor. Next the tempo drops as Lee Ritenour on Guitar takes the honours on a slow version of "Moanin'"
A reasonably brisk version of "The night has a thousand eyes" follows with Tom Hagans - Trumpet , John Allred - Trombone and Steve Wirts on Tenor are added. Garzone returns to front the trio on a lovely version of the Lee Morgan ballad "Ceora"
Mike Stern - Guitar joins Garzone and the trio on one of his own compositions "One Liners" - a swinger which features all five - with Kennedy's playing especially intense. Ellington's " In a sentimental Mood " gets an airing with Garzone featured. Next comes Cedar Walton's "Bolivia ", then the piano trio are featured on "In your own sweet way " and the album finishes with a version of "What is this thing called love" which starts off slowly and then without warning changes into an uptempo blast .

And also an added bonus is the excellent 8 page set of notes that comes with this CD

Tom Kennedy's playing borders on the edge of unbelievable and the sublime and let's hope that he does not leave it another 11 years for his next acoustic album.

AS THE TITLE SO APTLY SAYS " JUST PLAY!"

This is a cool album, and all performances are flawless. I had never heard of Tom Kennedy, but the compositions and performances are terrific.
